One of the biggest things that changed my massage practice wasn’t a new technique, a fancy tool, or a certification, it was slowing down and truly connecting with my clients.
When I take a new client into the treatment room, sit down face-to-face, review their intake form, discuss their medical history, medications, lifestyle, and most importantly, their chief complaint, I build trust before I ever place my hands on them.
Clients want to feel heard. They want to know that you understand their concerns and have a plan for their session. That conversation helps me create a treatment tailored specifically to their needs, and I believe it’s one of the reasons I’ve been able to build long-term client relationships over the last 25 years.
For new massage therapists: don’t rush through the intake process. Slow down, listen, ask questions, and make your clients feel important. The treatment starts long before the massage begins.
