THERAPEUTIC THURSDAy

When Deeper Isn’t Better

Ever wonder why a massage therapist sometimes doesn’t immediately work directly on the exact spot that hurts?

There’s actually a very good reason.

When a muscle is irritated, painful, or feels threatened, the body can respond by guarding, automatically tightening the surrounding muscles to protect the area.

And here’s the tricky part, more pressure isn’t always the answer.

When a muscle is already guarding, immediately applying deep pressure can cause the body to respond by tightening even more. Now the massage therapist is fighting against the very muscles they are trying to release.

That’s why a massage therapist may:

• Start somewhere other than where the pain is being felt
• Use medium or firm pressure rather than immediately going deep
• Spend time warming up the surrounding muscles
• Gradually approach the affected area as the body begins to relax

And this is where something massage therapists hear quite often comes into play:
“I can handle a lot of pain.”
“I have a really high pain tolerance.”

But in these situations, that can actually be counterintuitive to the objective.

The goal of therapeutic massage isn’t to determine how much pain a client can tolerate on the table.

The goal is to figure out what approach is going to encourage the muscle to do what it needs to do whether that’s relaxing, reducing guarding, decreasing discomfort or allowing for better mobility and range of motion.

Sometimes that means deeper pressure.

Sometimes it means less pressure.

Sometimes it means working somewhere completely different before ever approaching the area that hurts.

The most effective work isn’t necessarily the work that hurts the most, it’s the work that produces the best result.

Relaxation?
A little “please make my shoulders stop living up by my ears”? 😂
Maybe all of the above?

No judgment. No pressure. No cookie-cutter massage.

Just you, your body, and 17 years of experience helping people feel better. 💜

So…when was the last time you did something about those aches and pains instead of just complaining about them? 😉

Let’s fix that.

You don’t know what you don’t know.

We’ve all heard that saying, and when it comes to massage therapy, it is incredibly true.

Many people still think of massage as a luxury. A special treat. Something you get for your birthday, Mother’s Day, a vacation, or when you simply want to be pampered.

But massage therapy can be so much more than that.

Research supports massage as a non-invasive, non-drug approach that may help manage symptoms associated with a variety of conditions. It can be used as part of a larger treatment plan to help decrease pain, tension, stress, and other symptoms.

Depending on the individual and the condition, massage may be helpful for things such as:

• Fibromyalgia
• Certain types of chronic and acute pain
• Arthritis-related pain
• Plantar fasciitis
• Tennis or golfer’s elbow
• Carpal tunnel symptoms
• Neck and shoulder pain
• Tension headaches
• Some migraine symptoms
• Stress, anxiety, and certain symptoms of depression
• Sleep difficulties
• Some symptoms associated with PTSD
• Recovery and rehabilitation following certain procedures or injuries

And that list goes on.

Does massage cure these conditions?

No.

Is massage a replacement for your physician, medications, physical therapy, surgery, or other appropriate medical treatment?

No.

But massage can sometimes be a valuable complementary treatment alongside those things, with the goal of helping manage symptoms and improve quality of life.

And there’s another benefit that shouldn’t be overlooked: massage is relaxing.

When you’re dealing with pain or a chronic condition, having an opportunity to simply relax and let your body downshift has value, too.

The goal isn’t to promise a cure or tell you that massage can fix everything.

The goal is to understand that massage therapy may be one more tool in your toolbox—one that can potentially help you manage symptoms, support your overall well-being and live your life with less discomfort.

Sometimes the biggest obstacle is simply not knowing that the option exists.

You don’t know what you don’t know.
