Sleep is often hard to come by. Many Americans struggle with not only falling asleep, but staying asleep as well. If that's you, try some of these tips to get a restful sleep that should help you wake energized and ready to take on the day.
1. Create a relaxing environment. Make sure that the room is cool and dark and don't use a TV or device in that same space. Blackout curtains and a good book should help provide a restful environment.
2. Stick to a schedule. I know this can be difficult but it will provide your body with a routine that will make for more successful sleeping. Start with knowing what time you need to be up at and start the process of bedtime 8.5 hours prior to that.
3. Don't eat anything 2 hours prior to when your sleep schedule starts. The body can be a sensitive thing and if it's still digesting you can experience restless sleep as well as heartburn that may keep you up.
4. Stop caffeine after 1pm. This one can be the most difficult but it's really important. If you are struggling with afternoon fatigue, try going for a short walk or drinking 24oz of water. Caffeine can impact your body for hours and many don't realize that it's problematic.
5. Exercise. This can be a brisk 30 minute walk after dinner or a strenuous class at the gym in the morning. By elevating your heartrate, your body is more likely to relax and feel restful as it has burned off calories and excessive energy.
6. Stretch before bed and meditate. I know finding 10 minutes in your day to do this can be difficult but it can be incredibly helpful. Allow yourself to think about the days accomplishments as you stretch and plan for a productive day tomorrow. Writing notes and tasks for the next day can allow you to let them go and not dwell on the future. Stretching will promote circulation and allow your muscles, tendons and ligaments to lengthen and relax. Doing them at the same time can help save time and save you from overthinking during the night.

There is a big difference between eating a healthy diet and eating a balanced diet. Balanced diets are all about being inclusive of all food groups. A protein, check, a carb, check, a fruit and vegetable, check check! But, have you ever sat to think of how food makes you feel?
I challenge you this week to take a break about 30-60min after you eat each meal and document how you feel. Are you tired? Bloated? Feeling an oncoming headache? All of these symptoms could be produced by your gut because of what you ate!
