Empathy Is More Than Being Understanding—It’s a Clinical Skill.
Many therapists think of empathy as simply communicating understanding. But effective empathy is much more nuanced.
Different moments in therapy call for different kinds of empathic responses, each serving a unique therapeutic purpose.
Sometimes empathy helps clients:
🔹 Feel safe enough to explore difficult experiences.
🔹 Regulate overwhelming emotions.
🔹 Slow down and connect more deeply with their inner experience.
🔹 Access emotions that have been avoided or suppressed.
🔹 Transform painful emotional patterns through new emotional experiences.
Knowing when to soothe, when to deepen, when to gently evoke emotion, and how to do each intentionally can make therapy more effective and transformative.
If you’d like to strengthen one of the most fundamental skills in psychotherapy, join Dr. Robert Elliott and Ladan Safvati for the Advanced Empathic Attunement Training.
Whether you practice EFT or another therapeutic approach, you’ll leave with practical empathic interventions that can enrich your work with clients across a wide range of clinical presentations.
