🚨Important Announcement for Our Texas Livestock Community!
We are closely monitoring the first confirmed case of New World Screwworm in Texas. It’s crucial for all livestock owners to stay vigilant.
What to Look For:
-Unusual wounds: Look for open sores or lesions on animals, particularly around the head, neck, or tail area.
- Behavioral changes: Watch for signs of discomfort, restlessness, or excessive grooming of affected areas.
- Foul odor: A strong, unpleasant smell emanating from wounds can indicate a potential infestation.
🛡️ Prevention Measures:
- Use Fly Tags: Equip your livestock with effective fly tags to reduce insect populations.
- Apply Topical Insecticides: Use regular topical insecticides to protect your animals.
- Insect Growth Regulator (IGR) Tubs: Incorporate IGR tubs into your management plan to control fly populations effectively.
🚨 If You Suspect a Case:
1. Do Not Panic: Early detection is key!
2. Isolate Affected Animals: Keep suspected cases away from the herd to prevent spread.
3. Do Not Move Livestock: If you suspect they have been infected, do not move them.
4. Contact a Veterinarian: Reach out to your local veterinarian for questions or concerns.
