We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Joyce Thomas.
Joyce Ann Thomas, R.N., of Moosic, passed away on October 31, 2026. Born on November 13,1949, Joyce was 76 years old. She was the daughter of the late Sylvia and George Vladika of Taylor. Joyce shared 55 wonderful years of marriage with her high school sweetheart, Ronald Thomas.
In addition to her loving husband, Ron, Joyce is survived by her son, Taras, and his wife, Amy; her beloved granddaughter, Katherine Elizabeth (Kate), all of Duryea; and her sister, Robin Mizanty, and her husband, Jerry, of Eynon. Joyce was a 1967 graduate of Riverside High School in Taylor and a 1970 graduate of Scranton State General Hospital School of Nursing. She was proud to be the first gastroenterology nurse in Scranton. Throughout her nursing career, Joyce worked at Scranton State General Hospital, Moses Taylor Hospital, and Regional Hospital, as well as serving as a part-time school nurse for the Riverside School District. A dedicated and compassionate nurse, Joyce was known for her kindness, caring nature, and generous heart.
One of Joyce’s greatest passions in life was her love of animals, especially her dogs, whom she affectionately considered her “children.” She also found great joy in birdwatching and faithfully feeding the birds each day. Any animal or bird that visited her yard was certain to find a welcoming place and a plentiful “buffet.” When an injured animal crossed her path, Joyce never hesitated to put her nursing skills and compassionate heart to work, offering comfort and care to a creature in need.
In accordance with Joyce’s wishes, there will be no public viewing. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family, with interment at St. Michael’s Ukrainian Orthodox Cemetery in Scranton.
In honor of Joyce’s lifelong love and compassion for animals, those wishing to make a memorial contribution are kindly asked to consider a donation to a no-kill animal shelter of their choice.
Such a gesture would be a meaningful tribute to Joyce and the animals she held so dear.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Jacob Davis Funeral Home, Taylor.
