Navigating Burnout by Severity, Part 7: Sustainable Bandwidth
At some point in burnout recovery, the question changes.
It stops being only:
How do I get my bandwidth back?
And becomes:
How do I keep it?
Within the Bandwidth Model, I call this Sustainable Bandwidth.
This doesn’t mean returning to your old maximum. In fact, your old maximum may have been part of the problem.
Sustainable Bandwidth is more about learning what your functioning actually costs, leaving some functional margin, and recognizing when your Window of Functionality is starting to narrow.
Maybe you notice you’re rereading the same paragraph. Your attention drifts. You lose your train of thought. Switching gets harder. You become more distractible or foggy. For some people, physical warning signs may also appear, like headache or a subjective feeling of pressure.
I’ve heard versions of that progression repeatedly from clients and from people in my social media community. That’s anecdotal, not proof of a universal sequence, but it raises an interesting question because pieces of it overlap with research on mental fatigue, cognitive performance, stress, headache, and migraine.
The practical question becomes:
What happens to you before you crash?
And then:
Can you recognize it early enough to respond?
Within the model, when we repeatedly exceed what our current bandwidth can sustainably support, I call that Bandwidth Overdraft. The downstream functional cost that accumulates is Bandwidth Debt.
So instead of repeatedly pushing past the window, Sustainable Bandwidth asks us to do something harder:
Learn the window you currently have. Stabilize there. Then gradually test more.
This idea has some scientific precedent. Jason’s Energy Envelope Theory in ME/CFS similarly emphasizes matching energy expenditure to perceived available energy. The Bandwidth Model is broader because bandwidth isn’t just energy—it can vary across executive, sensory, cognitive, emotional, and other domains.
The goal isn’t to permanently do less.
It’s:
Recognize → regulate demand → recover → stabilize → gradually expand → reassess.
Because being able to do something once is not the same as being able to sustain it.
Sustainable access is repeatable access.
And maybe the best measure of recovery isn’t:
“Can I do everything I used to do?”
Maybe it’s:
“Can I do meaningful things today and still have enough bandwidth to participate in my life tomorrow?”
