James Joseph Chilton, lovingly known as “Uncle Jimmy,” passed away peacefully in North Carolina on September 1, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was 76 years old.
Born on December 9, 1949, in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, James lived a life marked by strength, loyalty, and an unwavering love for the people and animals who meant the most to him.
James was a proud veteran of the Vietnam War and a recipient of the Purple Heart, a testament to his courage and sacrifice in service to his country.
Jimmy was a beloved brother, a cherished uncle, and a true friend. He is survived by his best friend, Valerie, as well as his loving brothers, sisters, brother in laws, sister in laws and many nieces and nephews.
Jimmy had a special place in his heart for animals. He loved them all, but his cats and dogs held a particularly special place in his life. His compassion and affection for his four-legged companions were a reflection of the kind and caring person he was.
Though his loss leaves an emptiness for all who knew and loved him, Jimmy will be remembered for his strength, his loyalty, his generosity, his love of animals, and the memories he created with his family and friends.
Rest peacefully, you will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Theresa Setzer, age 87, of Hickory, passed away on September 2, 2026, at her home.
She was born on February 22, 1939 in Alexander County, the daughter of the late Earl Isenhour and Iretha Isenhour.
She was life long member of Friendship Lutheran Church, where she served as a Sunday School teacher for approximately 60 years to the small children.
During her working career, she worked at Carolina Glove Mill and the Highland House Furniture until her retirement.
Theresa enjoyed going to the beach, loved watching westerns and enjoyed listening to Elvis Pressley songs. She also loved to go dance, collecting stamps, coins and dolls.
Including her parents she was preceded in death by: her husband, Paul Daniel Bowman Jr.; her sisters, Mazelle Bowman, Joy Isenhour; her brothers, Steve Isenhour, Daine Isenhour, Zane Isenhour, Gary Isenhour, Phil Isenhour.
Those left to honor and cherish her memory include: her daughter, Janet Hildebran (Phil) of Taylorsville; her son, Randy Bowman (Michelle) of Bethlehem; her son, Jeffrey Bowman (Vickie, her full time caregiver) of Bethlehem; her grandchildren, Brittany Greathouse (Chris), Nathan Bowman, Hailey Prichard (Josh), Kristin McLain (Bryan), Kayla Hildebran; her great grandchildren, Zoey, Zane, Amelia, Alice, Avery, Waylon, Nevaeh, Colton, Riley; her sister, Melba Carrigan of Taylorsville; and a special cousin, Pauline Barkley.
The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, September 6, 2026 at Friendship Lutheran Church. Pastor Josh Tucker will officiate. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 3 p.m. until 4 p.m. prior to the service.

Joyce T. Herman, age 85, of Taylorsville, passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at her home.
Joyce was born January 21, 1941, in Iredell County, the daughter of the late Marvin G. Turner and Connie Olivia Stanley Turner.
Joyce worked for over 30 years at Catawba Valley Medical Center. She was a member of Liledoun Church of Christ. She liked to serve people; she was a giver taking food, and visiting others. She was very faithful and involved in her church. She was dedicated to the hospital and as a Beautician.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by: her husband, Roy Lee Herman; her sisters, Hazel Edison, Ruby Josey, Carol Gryder; her brothers, Glenn Turner, Arnold Turner.
Those left to cherish and honor Joyce’s memories include: her sister, Alice Warren of Statesville; her sister-in-law, Salome Turner of Pubelo West, Colorado; her brother-in-law, Dennis Gryder of Harmony; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and those who were like her children to her.

Phillip “Phil” Hoover, age 86, of Taylorsville, passed away on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Gordon Hospice House in Statesville.
Phil was born April 30, 1940, in Alexander County, the son of the late William Glenn Hoover and Mildred Sherrill Hoover.
Phil worked as a meat and food inspector for the USDA until his retirement and was a life-long member of the Taylorsville Presbyterian Church. He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, golfing, and farming. He enjoyed watching his bees make honey in his later years.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by: two brothers, Robert Hoover and wife, Judy, James Hoover.
Family members left to cherish and honor Phil’s memories include: his loving wife of 67 years, Carol Kerley Hoover; his sons, Phillip A. Hoover and wife, Ginger, Todd Hoover and wife, Gale; his grandchildren, Joey Hoover, Garrett Hoover, Bradley Hoover; his great-grandchild, Ava Hoover; his brother, Steve Hoover and wife, Becky; his sister-in-law, Diane Hoover; and a number of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Dean Barr, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. Dean passed peacefully on August 29, 2026, at the hospital in the comforting presence of his family. Born in Lansing, North Carolina, on July 16, 1941, Dean was the cherished son of Carl and Belle Barr. He is now reunited with them, along with his dearly missed sisters, Peggy DuVall, Wilma Fuhr, and Jean Morrison.
Dean leaves behind his devoted wife of 65 years, Ann, with whom he shared a beautiful journey of love and companionship since their marriage on May 12, 1961. His legacy continues through his daughter, Lana Kerley, her husband, Jeffrey, and his treasured grandson, Justin. Dean is also survived by his loving siblings, Helen Barr, Bobbie Blevins, Shirley Blevins, Linda Crumpton, Carol Hinckley, Jack Barr, Christie Smith, and Steve Barr.
A proud graduate of Wilkes Central High School, Dean embarked on a notable career in furniture design and construction. He began his professional path at Broyhill Furniture Company before joining Craftmaster in their inaugural year of 1972. Dean's dedication and passion for his craft were evident throughout his 50-year tenure at Craftmaster, where he contributed significantly to Product Development until his retirement in 2021 at the age of 80.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dean was a man of varied interests. He found great joy in woodworking, gardening, and fishing. His handiwork in these hobbies was a testament to his skill and creativity. Dean's quiet and gentle manner touched the lives of everyone he met, and his kindness left a lasting impression on all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until Noon, Friday, September 4, 2026, at Adams Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at Noon in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel. Pastor Tim Jolly will officiate. Burial will follow in the Hiddenite Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society - Breast Cancer Fund, in memory of Dean's enduring spirit and in support of a cause close to his heart.

William “Bill” Campbell, Sr., age 76, of Statesville, passed away on Friday, August 28, 2026, at Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital in Mooresville.
Bill was born March 23, 1950, in Elizabethan, TN, the son of the late Charles Wesley Campbell and Annabelle Arrowood Campbell.
Bill worked for Griffith Security for many years until his death. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Iredell County. He enjoyed playing his guitar, loved motorcycles, and especially loved his grandchildren and his dog, Obe.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Wesley Campbell.
Those left to cherish and honor Bill’s memories include: his wife, Carolyn “Cookie” Dotson Campbell of the home; his son, William “Bill” Campbell, Jr. (Michelle) of Catawba, NC; his daughter, Melissa Moore (Dennis) of Taylorsville; his grandchildren, Amber Campbell, Nathan Campbell, Kevin Campbell, Emily Whisenant, Gatlin Moore; his sister, Sherry Hicks (Ronnie) of Elizabethan, TN; and a number of other family members and friends.

Dolly Rebecca Parton, beloved singer, songwriter, actress, philanthropist, and one of the most treasured figures in American music and culture, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 80.

Born on January 19, 1946, in rural East Tennessee, Dolly was the fourth of twelve children and grew up in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains. From those humble beginnings came a voice, a talent, and a spirit that would eventually reach nearly every corner of the world.

Over a remarkable career spanning more than six decades, Dolly became one of country music's most recognizable and influential artists. Her extraordinary gift for storytelling gave the world songs that became part of the American soundtrack, including Jolene, Coat of Many Colors, 9 to 5, and I Will Always Love You. Her unmistakable voice, quick wit, larger-than-life style, and genuine warmth allowed her to connect with generations of people far beyond the boundaries of country music.

Her talents extended well beyond the stage. Dolly became a celebrated actress, author, businesswoman, and entrepreneur while remaining deeply connected to the Tennessee mountains and the people who helped shape her. Yet among her greatest accomplishments was the generosity she showed to others.

Through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, founded in honor of her father, millions of books have been placed into the hands of children around the world. Her philanthropy also supported education, disaster relief, healthcare, and countless communities and individuals throughout her lifetime.

For all the awards, records, rhinestones, and worldwide recognition, Dolly's greatest legacy may be the way she made people feel. She encouraged people to dream bigger, laugh at themselves, remain true to who they were, and extend kindness wherever possible. She never seemed to forget where she came from—and because of that, people from every walk of life felt as though they knew a little piece of her.

Dolly was preceded in death by her beloved husband of nearly 60 years, Carl Thomas Dean, who passed away in March 2025. Their famously private and enduring marriage remained one of the most cherished parts of her life.

The little girl from the mountains of Tennessee grew up to become an American icon, but she never lost the heart that made the world fall in love with her in the first place. Her songs will continue to be sung, her stories will continue to be told, and the kindness she put into the world will continue through generations of lives she touched.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Dolly’s extraordinary legacy of generosity and her lifelong commitment to children and literacy are encouraged to make a memorial contribution to Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library. Through the program, books are provided each month at no cost to children from birth to age five, helping Dolly’s love of reading and learning continue to reach future generations.

Donna Delane Arrowood, age 61, of Statesville, passed away on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at her home.
Donna was born December 29, 1964, in Charlotte, NC, the daughter of the late John Lee Delane and Kathleen Fairfax Delane.
Donna was of the Baptist faith and loved watching soap operas, news, and traveling to the beach. She also loved her Mt. Dews and coffee in the morning. She was a loving and caring wife, mother, grandmother, and sister who will be dearly missed.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by: granddaughter, Issabella Able; sister, Karen Delane, brother, Tommy Delane.
Those left to cherish and honor Donna’s memories include: her husband, Jeffrey Glenn Arrowood of the home; her daughters, Sommer Pressley (Steven) of Grover, NC, Glenda Arrowood of Troutman, NC; her son, Michael Delane (Ashley) of Statesville, NC; her grandchildren, Alissa Johnson, Logan McCoy, Zandra Delane, Elijah Johnson, Mariyah Able, Nessa Rickett; her sisters, Kathy Nettles (Russell) of Charleston, SC, Virginia Wyatt of Mooresville, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mildred Ruth Rowe Ferguson, 85, of Taylorsville, NC went from labor to reward on August 26, 2026. She was born November 17, 1940 to Rev. James Calvin Rowe and Vertie Carlton Rowe in Alexander County.
She graduated from Happy Plains High School in 1958 as the co-valedictorian. She went on to attend nursing school during the night and worked during the day to provide for her family. She graduated with her Associates degree in nursing and was one of the first Black nurses from Alexander County. She worked at Graystone ENT for several years and Catawba Valley Medical Center for a total of 18 years as a RN in the Birthing Center.
She was a lifelong member of St. John Baptist Church, where she was a faithful member. Having joined the church at an early age, she served in many capacities, including Sunday School treasurer, Vice President of the Missionary Circle, Baptist Training Union treasurer, and sang in the choir. She loved attending church services and supporting the church.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by siblings: Mary Lou Rowe, Rev. W.N. (Clara) Rowe, Sue (Chester) Grinton, Lucy (Howard) Little, James P. Rowe, Mary (Avery) Saner, Rev. J.C. Rowe, and Naomi Rowe; her brother in-law Albert Suddith and sister-in-law Gladys Rowe; and her husband Jim Ferguson.
Those left to cherish and honor her memory include her children Rev. Andrea O. Ferguson, Rev. James W. (Wendy) Ferguson, Dana F. (Kelby) Wiley; her grandchildren, Cierra Ferguson and Dominic Boyd, and an honorary grandchild Cassandra Lackey; her siblings Jeanette Suddith, Rev. C.E. Rowe, and Margaret Rowe; Two sisters-in-law, Shirley Rowe and Priscilla Rowe; a sister-niece Althea Horton; and many other beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mrs. Ferguson’s body will lie-in-state from 4:30 p.m. until 6 p.m., Sunday, August 30, 2026, in the Adams Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m.-7:30 p.m., Sunday, August 30, at Adams Funeral Home.
The Homegoing service will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, August 31 at St. John Baptist Church in Taylorsville, NC, her body will lie-in-state 30 minutes prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
