What if the pose was never the point?

For many of us, yoga begins with the body.

We come to stretch. To move. To breathe. To feel a little more at home in ourselves.

But the deeper teachings of yoga invite us beyond the shapes we make on the mat—and into the way we meet our lives.

Can we be present with what is here?
Notice the patterns of the mind?
Keep practicing without clinging to the outcome?
Become aware of the habits we reinforce?
Allow what we learn to change how we live?

The poses give us a place to practice.
But eventually, we get up from the mat.
And that’s where the rest of the practice begins. 🌻

Swipe through for 5 teachings from the Yoga Sutras that have very little to do with poses.

What if the pose was never the point?

We come to yoga for all kinds of reasons. Maybe we want to stretch, move, breathe, feel stronger, or find a little more ease in our bodies.

And then, somewhere along the way, yoga begins asking something more of us.
What happens when we stop measuring our practice by what our bodies can do—and begin noticing how we are meeting our lives?

In our newest Sunflower blog post, Dawn shares a personal reflection on the deeper teachings of yoga and a realization that has continued to shape both her own practice and the way she teaches:
Maybe the pose was never the point.

The poses matter. The breath matters. The time we spend on our mats matters.

But perhaps all of it is preparing us for the practice that happens when we step back into our lives.

No special events this week. Just yoga. And maybe that’s exactly what we need.

A place to breathe.
A place to move.
A place to soften.
A place to come exactly as you are.

Sometimes the most meaningful part of a yoga practice isn’t doing something extraordinary. It’s simply returning to your mat — and returning to yourself.

This week at Sunflower, there are so many ways to do that. Gentle movement. Yin. Restorative practices. Meditation. Mindful Hatha. Chakra balancing. A little something for whatever your body, heart, and nervous system might be asking for.

And you don’t have to be flexible.
You don’t have to know the poses.
You don’t have to arrive feeling calm.

You just have to arrive. We’ll meet you there. 🌻

Take a look at this week’s schedule and choose the practice that feels like yours.

This weekend, something we have dreamed about for a very long time became real. 🌻

We officially began our first Pathways to Peace 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training.

There is something incredibly tender about the beginning of a journey like this. Six students walked through the doors carrying their own stories, their own relationships with yoga, and their own hopes and questions about what might unfold in the months ahead.

And they said yes.

Yes to learning.
Yes to practicing.
Yes to being beginners.
Yes to looking inward.
Yes to discovering what yoga might have to teach them — long before some of them ever teach it to someone else.

We are deeply honored that these students have chosen to take this journey with us.

Pathways to Peace was created from a desire to offer something that goes beyond learning poses, anatomy, and how to sequence a class. We wanted to create a training where future teachers could explore yoga as a practice of relationship — with their bodies, their nervous systems, their inner lives, one another, and the students they will serve.

Over our first three days together, we laughed. We practiced. We learned. We journaled. We shared stories. We asked big questions.

And slowly, we began creating a community where each person is invited to show up more fully as themselves.

There are many hours, practices, conversations, discoveries, and probably plenty more laughter still ahead of us.

But for now, we simply want to celebrate these six students who chose to step into this journey.

Welcome, Pathways to Peace Class of 2026. 🌻
We are so grateful you're here.
And we cannot wait to see what unfolds.

What if book club didn’t require you to finish the book? ✨

Our final Evening Exhale of the summer is next Tuesday, August 25 — and you’re invited to join us for a gentle evening of yoga, poetry, conversation, community, and a few delicious snacks.

This month, we’re exploring In the Space Between by Tias Little — a beautiful collection of poetry and prose inviting us beneath the surface and into the quieter spaces of our own experience.

And the best part? There’s no homework. 💛

You don’t need to read the book ahead of time. We’ll send you the poems we’ll be exploring in the days leading up to our gathering, so you can simply arrive, settle in, and be part of the conversation.

🌿 Gentle, all-levels yoga

Maybe this is your sign. 🌿

You’ve thought about becoming a yoga teacher.

Maybe you’ve imagined yourself guiding a room into stillness.
Maybe you’ve felt called to share the practice that has changed something in you.
Maybe you’re simply ready to go deeper—to understand yoga beyond the shapes and into the heart of the practice.

Whatever brought you here, you don’t have to have it all figured out before you begin.

Pathways to Peace is a trauma-informed 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training designed to help you deepen your own practice, learn to teach with confidence and compassion, and discover the teacher that already lives within you.

And now, the doorway is almost closing.

✨ Registration closes Saturday, August 15.
🌱 Training begins August 21.

If you’ve been waiting for the right time, perhaps the invitation isn’t to wait any longer.

Come walk this pathway with us.
