PCOS is not “just irregular periods.” It can affect hormones, metabolism, cardiovascular health, and mental well being. PCOS is not caused by poor diet, lack of exercise, or weight. It is a medical condition influenced by genetics, hormones, and metabolic function.

This Preparedness Month, we are proud to recognize Mallory Barnes, our Preparedness Coordinator for Alexander County!
Mallory is an incredibly hard worker who wears many hats to help ensure our community and Health Department are prepared to respond when emergencies happen. As the only Public Health Preparedness Coordinator in Alexander County, her role is a big one, and she handles it with dedication, organization, and determination.
From emergency planning and training to coordinating resources and preparing for everything from everyday emergencies to large-scale events, Mallory works behind the scenes to make sure our community is better prepared for whatever comes our way.
Preparedness is something we don't always think about until we need it, but Mallory works year-round to make sure we're ready before an emergency occurs. Her commitment, reliability, and willingness to jump in wherever needed make her an invaluable part of our team!
Please join us in recognizing Mallory and thanking her for all the hard work she puts into keeping Alexander County prepared!

En promedio, cada semana se diagnostica cáncer a más de 290 niños y adolescentes en los Estados Unidos. Este mes tiene como objetivo:
• Crear conciencia sobre la realidad del diagnóstico, el tratamiento y el impacto emocional del cáncer infantil.
• Apoyar la investigación y promover mejores tratamientos y estrategias de prevención.
• Brindar apoyo emocional y social a las familias, incluyendo ayuda económica y conexión con la comunidad.
• Reducir las disparidades globales en el acceso a la atención médica mediante iniciativas como St. Jude Global y la Iniciativa Mundial contra el Cáncer Infantil.

• Raise awareness about the realities of childhood cancer diagnosis, treatment, and emotional impact
• Support research and advocate for better treatments and prevention strategies
• Provide emotional and social support to families, including financial relief and community connection
• Bridge global disparities in access to care through initiatives like St. Jude Global and the Global Initiative for Childhood Cancer

Childhood Obesity Awareness: Children with obesity face increased risks of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, and joint problems. They are also more likely to experience psychological difficulties, including low self-esteem and depression. The long-term consequences are serious: children with obesity are more likely to have obesity in adulthood, carrying those associated health risks through their lives.

Concienciación sobre la obesidad infantil: Los niños con obesidad corren un mayor riesgo de desarrollar diabetes tipo 2, presión arterial alta, apnea del sueño y problemas articulares. También son más propensos a experimentar dificultades psicológicas, como baja autoestima y depresión. ⚠️ Alexander County Health Department is alerting the community after NCDHHS confirmed multiple cases of rabies in baby goats at the mobile petting zoo, Farm Adventures, located in Iredell County.

While rare in humans, rabies is a dangerous and deadly disease that requires immediate medical attention after exposure.

No exposures have been reported in Alexander County at this time, but if you have any concerns that you or someone you know are at risk, please contact us at 828-352-7719.
