With deep sadness, we join the worldwide Buddhist community in mourning the passing of Robert A.F. Thurman

A renowned scholar, teacher, translator, and tireless advocate for Tibet, Bob helped bring the wisdom of Tibetan Buddhism to countless people around the world. He was the co-founder and president of Tibet House US, New York.

A longtime friend of Lama Tsultrim Allione & Tara Mandala, he generously shared his teachings with our sangha, including appearances on Lama Live and in our Heart of Buddhism program last year.

Lama Tsultrim reflected, "This is a big loss to this world. He was a real Bodhisattva."

May his vast merit continue to benefit all beings.

⚠️🐻 We've had reports of bear sightings in and around Ouray today. If you see a bear, please be sure to give it plenty of space - especially cubs, as their momma's are usually close by and are known to get very protective and aggressive.

A reminder that we live among bears and to follow these steps to reduce bear interactions. 👇🏼

🐻 It's almost summer here and bear activity is increasing, keep food sources secured to reduce conflicts this year!

🐻 Become Bear Prepared
Colorado Parks and Wildlife reminds people to take simple precautions to avoid human/wildlife conflicts and help keep bears wild.

🐻 Bear-proofing your home:
- Keep garbage in a well-secured location. Only put out garbage on the morning of pickup.
- Clean garbage cans regularly to keep them free of food odors: ammonia is effective.
- Keep garage doors closed. Do not leave pet food or stock feed outside.
- Use a bear-resistant trash can or dumpster.
- Bird feeders are a major source of bear/human conflicts. Attract birds naturally with flowers and water baths. Do not hang bird feeders from April 15 to Nov. 15.
- Don’t allow bears to become comfortable around your house. If you see one, haze it by yelling, throwing things at it and making loud noises to scare it off.
- Secure compost piles. Bears are attracted to the scent of rotting food.
- Clean the grill after each use, and clean up thoroughly after cookouts.
- If you have fruit trees, don't allow the fruit to rot on the ground.
- Talk to your neighbors and kids about being Bear Prepared.

🚙Cars, traveling and campsites: ⛺️
- Lock your doors when you’re away from home and at night.
- Keep the bottom-floor windows of your house closed when you're not at home.
- Do not keep food in your vehicle; roll up windows and lock the doors of your vehicles.
- When car-camping, secure all food and coolers in a locked vehicle.
- Keep a clean camp, whether you’re in a campground or in the backcountry.
- When camping in the backcountry, hang food 100 feet or more from the campsite; don’t bring any food into your tent.
- Cook food well away from your tent; wash dishes thoroughly.

Medicine Ranch isn’t just a brand. It’s a real place, with gardens and chickens and cats and bears!

Last night the bear ripped into the henhouse.

Today we saved 4 of 10 dearest girls.

If you came by the Medicine Ranch shop in Telluride or if y’called today, this is why we weren’t there. We shut it down to take care of the beings down here at the garden property.

Fortunately, we have friends who will adopt these four hens, because that bear is coming back for sure.

I recently posted this property for rent. We knew that any night the property was not occupied there was a higher chance the bears would take advantage.

All we can do now is to say prayers for a half dozen birds, send blessings to the bear spirit, find good homes for our four remaining girls and complete the sacred task of connecting this special property with those people who will love and steward the plants, animals, minerals and mushrooms, all kingdoms, here at the OG Medicine Ranch, yo! .

I checked our traditional Arnica Cordyfolia (Heart Leaf Arnica) patches today. They’re beginning to flower early this year as are many plants due to drought conditions. The good news is that plants are smart. If there’s a drought, they bust a move and procreate early.

Anyone interested in learning proper, sustainable harvesting and processing practices, let us know. We may do an actual class TBA, but I’m harvesting about daily & willing to share the medicine, the magic, & the yoga practice of thee harvest. So, c’mon then!
