The truth is, we don’t always know if or when a child will begin speaking.

Our job as SLPs is to meet them right where they are and build communication from there. That might mean using signs, gestures, pictures, sounds, AAC, and spoken words.

But the research is clear—early intervention matters. 🩷

I had a conversation with a little girl recently that stuck with me. She was comparing the way she speaks to other kids and shared that another child had said something hurtful about her speech.

It was such an important reminder as kids head back to school: kids notice differences, and they notice how others respond to them.

Someone may look different, talk differently, learn differently, or move differently. Different should never mean less.

Teach your kids to be the reason another child feels included, not the reason they go home questioning themselves. Teach your kids to be the reason to make someone feel good, not bad.

Bullying is never okay.

This is a conversation I have with families almost every single week. 🩷 One of the hardest parts after realizing your child may need support is simply knowing where to start.

The good news? There are local resources available! For children under 3, Inland Regional Center may be the first step. For children 3 and older, you can request an evaluation through your local school district. Parents can make these referrals themselves you don’t need to wait for someone else to tell you to.

Every child and every situation is unique, but knowing where to begin can make all the difference. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or aren’t sure which path is right for your child, we’re always happy to help point you in the right direction.
