Ashtanga yoga refers to the Eight-Limb Path of Yoga described by the sage Patañjali in the Yoga Sutras. These eight limbs outline a complete path for spiritual and personal transformation:
Yama – ethical restraints (how we relate to others)
Niyama – personal observances (how we relate to ourselves)
Asana – physical postures
Pranayama – breath regulation
Pratyahara – withdrawal of the senses
Dharana – concentration
Dhyana – meditation
Samadhi – union or spiritual integration
The modern physical practice known as Ashtanga Yoga (the dynamic vinyasa system taught by Pattabhi Jois) is inspired by this philosophy. The flowing sequences, breath, bandhas, and drishti are meant to be a practical gateway into the eight-limbed path—moving from the physical body into concentration, meditation, and ultimately inner stillness.
