🇮🇹 Balance Goes to Italy (10 day countdown)— Cinque Terre Planning

Thank you everyone that commented, messaged me or to chatted with me about my shoe choices! I received great suggestions, opinions and some recommendations on new brands and styles to check out.

Thinking of all that walking and hiking coming up (in just over a week!), has me dreaming about the part of our Italy trip that I may be looking forward to the most - Cinque Terre. 🇮🇹💚

This area consists of five little villages tucked along the Ligurian coastline, connected by trails, trains and the sea. I've seen the pictures, read blogs about the area and looked at maps of the area, but it still feels a little surreal that soon I'll actually be there.

My husband, John, visited Cinque Terre on his previous solo trip several years ago. He basically powered through the whole thing in one day. He saw all five villages, but this time we're doing things a little differently and slowing it down. We'll spend few days there to hike between the villages, wander without an agenda, stop when something catches our attention, eat good food, enjoy the views and actually experience the area instead of trying to fit as much as we can in in just one day.

Sometimes finding balance isn't about doing less. It's about giving yourself enough time to actually enjoy what you're doing. I am not always great about that, but this trip is much about finding that balance of fitting things in, but also slowing down to enjoy and appreciate each moment.

So during this slowing down, and balance in life seeking I'm looking at the places and activities I want to designate my energy to and I am especially excited about the hiking in this region! There are so many different trails and viewpoints that I'm having a hard time deciding which ones deserve our limited time.

So if any friends have been there please share:
What's your favorite section of trail?
Which of the five villages was your favorite?
Is there a viewpoint, swimming spot or little place we might otherwise walk right past?

Please share - I am taking notes! And I will definitely be sharing the highlight here with you all! 🇮🇹💚

I am definitely over this heat wave, how about you all!?🔥☀️

Massage is almost always a wonderful way to relax, reset your nervous system and give tired, sore muscles some attention…but when it’s this hot outside, the thought of oil, sheets and blankets on a massage table might not sound quite as inviting.

That’s where chair massage comes in!

Stop by Balance tomorrow, Thursday 8/27 from 12–3pm for walk-in chair massage.

Short sessions
No oil
No hot sheets/blankets
Cold lemonade/water available

Come in, and give yourself a little reset without committing to a full massage session.

And hopefully these hot days are numbered! When the weather starts cooling down and getting cozy on the massage table sounds wonderful again, we’ll be here and happy to get your full massage booked too. 💆‍♀️

🇮🇹 Balance Goes to Italy — Packing Begins🇮🇹

We’re getting closer to Italy, which means I start asking myself: Do I really need this? And more importantly…will it fit in my pack? 😂

When we travel, we rarely check bags. Which means I have to fit everything into a carry-on sized backpack and one personal item.

I’ve actually gotten pretty good at packing light. My definition of “essentials” has gotten smaller and smaller with every trip. These days, it’s basically medications, a toothbrush and small toothpaste, lip gloss, a hairbrush, refillable water bottle and a few other little things. Most toiletries I just buy once we get to our destination.

I’ve even given up bringing jewelry, accessories, my mini blow dryer and curling iron. It took a bit bit I learned to accept that adventure Holly does not need to be quite as put together as everyday Holly. 😂

There is, however, one packing problem I always seem to mess up.

Underwear.

It doesn’t matter how long we’re gone or how many times we do laundry along the way. Somehow, on practically every trip, I run out of underwear right before we come home. Which means I now own underwear from around the world and USA because I inevitably have to go buy another pair or two. 🤪🫣

This time I am prepared and have enough for every day. I will probably buy some Italian intimates anyway…tradition is tradition. 🇮🇹👙

My current packing dilemma is actually shoes.

I’ve been dealing with plantar fasciitis in one foot, and have learned that the right shoes make all the difference in how much walking I can comfortably do. And Italy is going to involve a lot of walking and hiking.

I’m definitely wearing my hiking shoes on the plane since they’re the bulkiest. I’m bringing my Taos sandals with good arch support and heel straps so I can walk comfortably in them and wear them with the one dress I’m packing.

However, I’m debating a third pair—my casual Taos tennis shoes. They’re what I wear almost every day now and would give my feet a break from the heavier hiking shoes. They aren’t my favorite style shoe, but sadly my beloved Converse Chucks that have been my go-to style since high school are apparently no longer acceptable to my feet. Isn’t getting older fun!?

So travelers, I want to hear your best packing wisdom!

What’s something you used to pack but have learned you can completely live without?

Would you sacrifice the space for a third pair of shoes?

And what is the thing you somehow always run out of, forget or end up buying while you’re traveling? Hoping I’m not the only one with the un**es on that list!

Definitely looking for some balance on what to bring and what to leave space for to bring back on this adventure! 🇮🇹✈️

🇮🇹 Balance Goes to Italy in 22 Days 🇮🇹

John and I have many places to visit on our travel list because they’re iconic, but some also have a story or little background for why they are on our list. Venice is one of those - iconic and with a back story.

Years ago, before we married, John took a solo trip through Italy. He loved the adventure and still talks about what an incredible experience it was. He has shown me a picture of the Florentine steak he ate as many times as the gorgeous scenery and churches he visited. So needless to say, the steak is also on the must experience agains for him. When we look at his Venice pictures though he says that Venice was the one place where he really wished he’d had someone there to share it with. So, going back to Venice together has been on our list for a very long time. ❤️

Of course we’ll see some of the iconic sights, but we’re also the kind of travelers who love wandering away from the busiest areas, getting a little lost, finding the neighborhood restaurant we didn’t know existed, and discovering the things that aren’t on a Top Ten list.

So for those of you who have been to Venice — tell me your secrets! While John has been before we want to make this a new discovery together. A quiet neighborhood, tiny restaurant, unusual shop, quirky attraction, local market…please share any recommendations!

I’m really interested in experiencing some of Italy’s approach to wellness and self-care while we’re traveling as well. I’d love to find a traditional or uniquely Venetian spa or massage experience, learn about local herbs or body-care traditions, and see if I can bring home a little inspiration for the studio.

This is definitely going to be a highlight for both John and I on our trip and I look forward to sharing it with you all ❤️🇮🇹
