This is a post about smoking. Its not in any way meant to shame anyone or make them feel guilty about whether or not you smoke, how many times you've tried to quit or even if you have any desire to quit. On Friday, Oct 31, the LUCAS bus, who is WVU's Lung Cancer Screening Bus will be coming to Terra Alta. They travel all over throughout the year doing these Lung cancer screenings. We hear a lot of people say, "I don't want to know" which is understandable except for a few small truths you may not be aware of; Very rarely is lung cancer a disease that you just die from with no other complications. Most find out from an ED visit because of breathing problems, or some other complication that makes living uncomfortable. Then you find out its cancer, and quite possibly by that point, it has spread and your options are limited. EARLY DETECTON is key. There are so many more options available treatment wise, when its caught early. A lot of these screening do show small nodules, but it's not a concern until it gets to a certain size. That's why they recommend YEARLY screens. they can watch it grow and treat when its needed. For a lot of people, it's covered completely with no financial burden to you. When you do the Bus, its 5-15 minutes and you are done. If you ask yourself, if I can't catch my breath or stop coughing and go to Hospital and find out its cancer, Am I going to treat it?" If the answer is no, then maybe you're right not to know or get it, but if you would, I promise, knowing is better, it'll preserve not just quality of life, but also life in general. There is no rules about smoking afterwards, so there is no commitment to stop, just keeping an eye on things because you are higher risk.
