Our Class of 2028 is wrapping up their very first clinical rotation in acute care! 🏥

Over the past several weeks, they have taken what they’ve learned in the classroom and applied it to patient care, building confidence, and growing as future physical therapists.

As they return to campus this fall, we are excited to see them continue building on this strong foundation. A heartfelt thank you to our clinical instructors and partners for investing in the next generation of PTs.

Christopher went into cardiac arrest, was taken to a hospital, and was in respiratory failure when he arrived. Doctors performed procedures to support his breathing, including a tracheostomy to continue ventilation, and gave him a PEG tube for nutrition.

Christopher was later transferred to Kindred Hospital Indianapolis North for ventilator weaning, medical care, and rehabilitation.

Christopher was admitted to Kindred requiring mechanical ventilation, tracheostomy management, and IV antibiotics. He was extremely difficult to wean from the vent. The respiratory therapy team, including Tammy, Candice, Josh, Janeen, Nikki, and Mihret, spent extra time in Christopher’s room to boost his confidence. Following successful liberation from the ventilator, Christopher transitioned to Airvo oxygen support and was subsequently weaned to 2-4L of oxygen via nasal cannula.

Initially, Christopher’s participation in physical and occupational therapy was limited by shortness of breath and increased oxygen demands. However, he made significant functional gains, progressing from bedside sitting to supervised standing transfers.

By discharge, Christopher was performing activities of daily living and self-care tasks with supervision without getting out of breath. Additionally, the speech therapy team progressed Christopher to a regular oral diet, with no further requirement for tube feedings, and his antibiotics were discontinued.

Christopher’s family was very complimentary of the care he received at
Kindred. He was discharged to a subacute rehabilitation facility for
continued recovery.

Andrew is a semitruck driver who was involved in a crash in which his truck rolled over. Andrew was intubated on-site, then admitted to a hospital. He was diagnosed with acute respiratory failure as well as a type of traumatic brain injury called a diffuse axonal injury in which the brain shifts rapidly inside the skull. He also suffered both a subdural hemorrhage (brain bleed) and subdural hygroma (a collection of brain and spinal fluid) in the space between the brain and skull. He eventually received a tracheostomy to continue ventilation, a PEG (feeding) tube, a chest tube, and IV drips to manage blood pressure. He was transferred to Kindred Hospital Indianapolis North for vent weaning, medical care, and rehab.

Upon admission to Kindred, Andrew was not awake and alert and unable to follow commands. He began restorative care for range-of-motion exercises and out-of-bed mobility in a cardiac chair. Eventually, he started waking up and weaning off the vent. Andrew also began physical, occupational, and speech therapy.

At the time of discharge, Andrew had made major gains in his recovery. He was off the vent, decannulated and breathing on his own. He was also off all IV antibiotics. In addition, Andrew could stand, perform self-care tasks, and transfer to a chair with assistance. With the support of a speech therapist, Andrew returned to a regular diet, no longer relying on tube feeding. Andrew was discharged to a community rehabilitation hospital.

Andrew’s wife, Lisa, was very happy with all of the care he received at Kindred. She is ready for the next chapter and to eventually get him home.
