Did you know sciatica isn’t actually a condition itself? 🌿
Sciatica is a term used to describe symptoms that occur when the nerves that contribute to the sciatic nerve become irritated or compressed.
The sciatic nerve is formed from multiple nerve roots that exit the lower spine. Think of these nerves like tributaries flowing into a river—they come together in the pelvic region to help form the large sciatic nerve that travels down the leg.
When one or more of these nerve roots become irritated or compressed, symptoms may include pain, burning, tingling, numbness, or weakness in the buttock or leg. Depending on which nerve is affected and the degree of irritation, symptoms may extend into the calf, foot, or toes.
Sciatica is commonly associated with conditions such as a bulging or herniated disc, but there are other possible causes as well. Piriformis syndrome can also cause symptoms that may mimic sciatica, including pain, tingling, or numbness that travels through the buttock and down the leg.
Because similar symptoms can have different causes, identifying where the irritation is coming from is an important part of determining the appropriate approach to care.
At Dr. Asher Natural Chiropractic, Dr. Asher performs a series of orthopedic, neurological, and chiropractic examinations to help determine what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether the irritation is originating from the lower back or elsewhere along the path of the sciatic nerve.
