🚧 KIngs Highway I-30 Overpass to Close for 19 months. 🚧
Heads up, Texarkana drivers. Big changes are coming to I-30 / Kings Highway area this week that will likely make things a mess in the area.
The FM 989 / Kings Highway bridge over Interstate 30 closes to all traffic Thursday, June 11 around 9 a.m. so crews can replace the structure. Work on the new bridge is expected to take 19 months and the Kings Highway I-30 overpass will remain closed during that time.
Then starting at midnight Saturday, June 13, all I-30 traffic through Texarkana shifts to the frontage roads for about a week, weather permitting, while crews demolish the old bridge.
Here is what that means for you:
Westbound I-30 traffic exits at Exit 222 / Summerhill Road and gets back on at the new ramp west of FM 989 / Kings Highway.
Eastbound traffic exits at Exit 218 / FM 989 / Kings Highway and gets back on between Summerhill Road and State Line Avenue.
Drivers on the frontage roads will roll through the Kings Highway intersections without stopping. Anyone traveling on Kings Highway itself will have to stop at the frontage roads.
The new bridge will sit higher, with 18.5 feet of clearance instead of the current sub-17 feet, and it will be wider to match the widened Kings Highway. The finished span will have five lanes, including shared-use lanes for cyclists and six-foot sidewalks on each side.
The full rebuild is expected to take about 19 months.
When I-30 traffic returns, eastbound drivers will see a new pattern as the interstate widening continues. Westbound lanes go back to two normal side-by-side lanes. Once the widening wraps, there will be three lanes in each direction.
Give yourself extra time and plan your route.
