πŸ¦ΏπŸ’™ What Are AFOs? πŸ’™πŸ¦Ώ
AFO stands for Ankle-Foot Orthosis, a custom brace worn on the lower leg and foot to help improve stability, alignment, and mobility.

AFOs can help children:
βœ”οΈ Improve walking patterns
βœ”οΈ Increase balance and stability
βœ”οΈ Support weak muscles
βœ”οΈ Promote proper foot and ankle alignment
βœ”οΈ Reduce the risk of falls
βœ”οΈ Increase independence with mobility

In physical therapy, AFOs are often used alongside therapeutic exercises and activities to help children move more safely and efficiently. Every child is unique, and AFOs are customized to meet their specific needs and goals.

πŸŽ²πŸ’™ Making Therapy Fun While Building Strength and Confidence! πŸ’™πŸŽ²
During this physical therapy session, Raya (Kid of the Year 2021) worked on gait training while playing Candy Land in the parallel bars. Walking within the parallel bars is more challenging than ambulating with her walker because it requires increased balance, strength, postural control, and independence.
By incorporating a favorite game, therapy becomes engaging and motivating while helping children work toward important functional goals.

πŸ’™ Why Use a Vibrating Plate During Therapy? πŸ’™

Did you know that a vibrating plate can be a valuable tool in pediatric therapy?

During this session, the child practiced catching a ball while standing on a vibrating plate. By adding the task of catching a ball, the child is working on hand-eye coordination, reaction time, motor planning, and balance simultaneously. These activities help build the skills needed for success in everyday play, sports, and daily activities. 🏐

πŸŽ₯πŸ’™ We’re So Proud of Jade! πŸ’™πŸŽ₯

Jade and Mrs. Sandy participated in filming for the upcoming United Way campaign video, where Jade had the opportunity to share her story and experience at Temple.

While she was a little nervous, Jade was also incredibly excited to tell others about her journey and the impact therapy at Temple has had on her life.

We are grateful to families like Jade’s who are willing to help others understand the difference that community support can make. Their story is a wonderful reminder of why we do what we do every day and what United Way does for us and the community! ‼️

πŸ’™ June is National Dysphagia Awareness Month πŸ’™

What better time to highlight the important work our speech therapists do to support children with feeding and swallowing challenges!

During this session, Ellisyn worked with Mrs. Sarah on tongue thrust reduction and improving oral motor control while drinking from a straw. To help support her goals, VitalStim therapy was incorporated into the treatment session.

VitalStim is a specialized therapy technique that uses gentle electrical stimulation to help strengthen muscles involved in swallowing and feeding. Combined with skilled speech therapy interventions, it can help children improve oral motor function and develop safer, more efficient swallowing skills.
