JJP Proudly Participates in Westchester County Annual Veterans Appreciation Day at Playland Park.
On Saturday, August 8th, JJP proudly took part in the Westchester County Veterans Service Agency’s annual Veterans Appreciation Day at Playland Park, a community outreach event that reaffirmed its commitment to honoring and supporting our nation’s veterans.

The event saw a strong turnout, with most veterans engaged by our team already enrolled and actively receiving VA services. Recognizing the importance of peer support and advocacy, we encouraged these Veterans to serve as ambassadors by sharing vital information about VA health care and benefits with fellow veterans who may not yet be enrolled. In addition to outreach efforts, JJP provided essential health screenings, including blood pressure checks for five participating veterans. Attendees also received valuable information about available VA programs, services, and resources designed to support their well-being and reintegration.

The event successfully promoted Veteran-to-Veteran outreach and highlighted the agency’s ongoing dedication to providing accessible, comprehensive support to those who have served.

On July 11, 2026, physical therapist Christine Wang, recreational therapist Molly Herallal, and student physical therapist Kayleigh Broderick participated in the Bronx VA’s annual adaptive surfing event at Rockaway Beach. During the event, staff reintroduced Veterans to the challenges and joys of navigating the beach, rocky seas, and the art of adaptive surfing. The event provided an opportunity for Veterans to socialize, practice skills gained in rehab, and enjoy outdoor activities beyond the hospital setting.

Play It Forward, an adaptive sports initiative run by Wheeling Forward, organizes the event. Dedicated to creating inclusive opportunities for individuals with disabilities in the New York City area, the program focuses on breaking barriers, promoting self-discovery, and building community through transformative sports experiences. It serves children, adults, and Veterans, ensuring that disabilities do not limit potential.

The Bronx VA is proud to partner annually with Play It Forward to support Veterans’ community reintegration, encourage new activities, and help them reconnect with what they love—regardless of ability level.

Four dedicated Veterans from the James J. Peters VA Medical Center represented our facility with pride at the 45th National Veterans Wheelchair Games held in Detroit, Michigan.

Throughout the week-long event, these remarkable Veterans demonstrated exceptional determination, sportsmanship, and resilience as they competed against participants from VA medical centers nationwide. They engaged in a diverse array of adaptive sports, including air rifle, boccia, shot put, discus, javelin, bowling, motor rally, table tennis, corn hole, and several other competitions designed to promote physical fitness, independence, and the spirit of healthy competition. The National Veterans Wheelchair Games is the largest annual wheelchair sports and rehabilitation event for U.S. Veterans with disabilities. Beyond the athletic competitions, the event serves as a platform to enhance physical conditioning, build self-confidence, foster peer support, and reinforce skills essential for lifelong health and community reintegration. Our team proudly earned a total of nine medals, with every athlete returning home with at least one medal an inspiring testament to their dedication and commitment to achieving their personal rehabilitation and wellness goals.

The James J. Peters VA Medical Center congratulates our Veterans for their outstanding achievements and ongoing pursuit of health, independence, and excellence.
