Calvary Hospital President Michael J Fosina MPH, FACHE recently met with New York State Assemblymember Karines Reyes RN Reyes, RN, who represents Assembly District 87, at Calvary on Eastchester Road. Their conversation covered acute palliative care, hospice, access to care, community education, and workforce development. As a practicing oncology nurse, Assemblymember Reyes brings an informed and vital perspective on end-of-life care. She understands how a serious diagnosis affects patients and families, and why clear information and compassionate support matter at every step. Access to compassionate care begins with awareness and ensuring that patients and families understand their options and can receive support when it will make the greatest difference. Calvary Hospital President Michael J Fosina MPH, FACHE, recently welcomed New York State Assemblymember Amy Paulin, who represents Assembly District 88 and chairs the Assembly Health Committee. Their conversation focused on expanding access to acute palliative care and hospice care: helping communities better understand these services, reaching patients and families earlier in the course of serious illness, and developing the skilled, compassionate workforce needed to care for them. We are grateful to Assemblymember Paulin for taking the time to meet our team, learn more about Calvary’s distinctive model of care, and hear about the patients and families we are privileged to serve. Today, we remember all those whose lives were taken in the terrorist attacks of 2001. We honor the first responders, service members, public servants, healthcare professionals, and ordinary citizens who responded with extraordinary courage and compassion. We hold especially close the 9/11 responders, survivors, and family members entrusted to our care, especially people in our care today. We also recognize and thank our staff who have treated, comforted, and supported those affected by September 11th throughout the past twenty-five years. We pray: God of mercy and peace, we entrust to Your loving care all who died on September 11th and all whose lives were forever changed by that day. Comfort those who grieve. Bring strength and peace to the responders, survivors, patients, and families in our care. Bless the healthcare professionals and caregivers who serve them with love, compassion, and dignity. May we honor those we remember by caring faithfully for one another. Amen. What an inspiring day for the Calvary community! Calvary’s 38th Annual Golf & Tennis Classic brought friends and supporters together at Brae Burn Country Club for a memorable day of camaraderie, friendly competition, and compassion, all in support of our patients and families. Thanks to the extraordinary generosity of our sponsors, participants, committee members, and guests, the 2026 Classic raised a record setting $400,000! These vital funds will strengthen Calvary’s programs and services, including therapeutic care, bereavement support and CampCompass®, our annual camp for grieving children. Another inspiring moment was the presentation of the Dennis E. Berberich Scholarship to Calvary Care Technician Wendy Moncada. Awarded annually to a member of Calvary’s nursing team pursuing an education to become a registered nurse, the scholarship reflects the Berberich family’s enduring commitment to exceptional care and belief in Calvary’s people. Every boat told a personal story and no boat traveled alone.
At Calvary’s CampCompass® this month, campers displayed their decorated rowboats together as a fleet. Each vessel was unique, reflecting one child’s memories, emotions, and journey after loss. Together, the boats reminded everyone that while grief was deeply individual, healing also happened through connection. With caring peers, trained counselors, community supporters, and dedicated volunteers beside them, children discovered that other kids were navigating difficult waters too. Established by Calvary in 1997 and with contributions from generous donors, CampCompass® has brought grieving children and teens together each summer to remember, connect, have fun, and heal.

A Remarkable Mother-Daughter DAISY Distinction:
Calvary Hospital congratulates Margaret Lehane, MSN, RN, CHPN, Calvary Hospital’s Director of Nursing, and her daughter, Ciara Hourican, on the exceptional achievement of both receiving DAISY recognition in the same week — in different states!
Margaret was honored with the DAISY Nurse Leader Award for her compassionate leadership and commitment to nursing excellence. Ciara, a senior nursing student at the University of North Georgia, was recognized for her patient advocacy, kindness, and empathy.
It was especially meaningful that Margaret was able to acknowledge Ciara’s formal entry into the nursing profession by pinning Ciara during her graduation ceremony.
