A clean keloid scar surgery moment ✂️

This patient came to me with large keloid scars on her earlobes resulting from ear piercings that have been growing steadily since 2020. I excised the keloid scars using simple procedures (with big names) - a keloidectomy and fistulectomy . Basically I used a scalpel to carve off the keloid scars and then re-approximated wound edges with stitches in the front and back of the earlobe to fashion normally shaped earlobes. After closure, the patient will receive steroid injections at the surgical site to minimize the risk of keloid scars re-forming. The patient was super excited to have her normal ears back and I was arguably just as excited to perform such a satisfying/simple/yet life changing procedure. Name a better day.

2) … in Nashville 🤠

Mohs (skin cancer) surgeons from across the nation rounded up for the American College of Mohs Surgery annual meeting this past weekend to discuss advancements in skin cancer and reconstructive surgery, medical treatment of skin cancer (exciting stuff here!), and policy/regulation. And I rounded out on Nashville hot chicken. Would rerun it.

Slice right to see what came out 🔪

This is a lipoma on the thigh that I removed surgically. Lipomas are somewhat common, harmless collections of fat cells. They kind of look like a yellow Flubber when they come out (90s babies anyone?). Although benign, they can grow to become very large and/or painful and some patients choose to have them surgically removed, as was the case here. There’s really nothing like a good lipoma case to round out the week.

3 YEARS IN as an attending - 3 YEARS OUT of residency - headshot

3 career highlights:
✨ It’s been my busiest year yet! My schedule has expanded to 9 skin cancer surgeries in the morning and 5 general skin surgeries in the afternoon.
✨ I’m scheduled to start lecturing at a local university (wish me LOTS of luck 🙃).
✨ I have been privileged to start giving back to my university through Texas Exes.

3 life highlights:
✨ My baby boy turned 1 🥹… and we found out we have another on the way!
✨ I ran my 3rd marathon.
✨ My hubs became the chief of the orthopedic surgery department at his hospital and PROUD doesn’t even come close.

3 things I learned:
✨ Gratitude - this moment used to be the unimaginable future 🤯.
✨ Pace myself- this stage isn’t over in 4 years like all the rest.
✨Be PRESENT
(Help me I’m starting to sound like a resident wellness lecture)

Thank you to everyone who has been following me along this journey, especially to my day ones who have been here since I started this account when I was a baby resident 🥹. Cheers to the next one.

Another nose, another Mohs 🤌🏼

This extensive wound on the nose resulted from surgical removal of a skin cancer (basal cell carcinoma) using the Mohs surgery technique. The wound involves exposed cartilage, a collapsed nostril, and a small hole through the inner lining of the nose. I repaired the wound by 1) repairing the inner lining with sutures, 2) transferring cartilage from the ear to restore the structure of the nostril, and 3) transferring skin from in front of the ear to replace the missing skin. The end result is cosmetic and functional perfection.
