đ THE HEART CHAKRA â WHERE BODY, EMOTION & CONNECTION MEET
In the chakra tradition, the heart chakraâAnahataâis located in the center of the chest and is associated with love, compassion, connection, forgiveness and our ability to give and receive.
From a bodywork perspective, this same area is incredibly interesting.
The chest contains the heart and lungs and is surrounded by fascia, muscles, ribs and connective tissue involved in every breath. The vagus nerve also plays an important role in communication between the brain, heart, lungs and other organs and in regulating the autonomic nervous system.
When we live under prolonged stress, our bodies can reflect it physicallyâour breathing may become shallow, the shoulders can round forward, the chest and neck can tighten, and the nervous system may spend more time in a state of protection and alertness.
This is one place where ancient spiritual traditions and modern body awareness can beautifully intersect.
Through intentional breathing, gentle bodywork, fascial work and practices that encourage relaxation, we can help create conditions that support parasympathetic activity and a greater sense of safety and ease in the body.
Spiritually, we might call that opening the heart.
Physiologically, we might describe parts of that experience as changes in breathing, muscle tension, sensory input and autonomic nervous-system regulation.
Maybe they donât have to compete with each other.
The body can be understood through anatomy and physiology while still leaving room for the deeper human experiences of love, grief, connection, forgiveness and healing.
đ Sometimes opening the heart begins with helping the body feel safe enough to soften.
