I wanted to mention Thomaston Pediatrics will be closed Monday, September 7 for the Labor Day holiday. We will reopen Tuesday, September 8 with regular office hours. Thank you and I hope everyone has a restful and safe holiday weekend.

With Upson Lee schools starting Monday and Open House today, this school year will carry a special significance for me. I will have 2 daughters teaching together over at the middle school 6th grade! Bethany is starting her 4th year teaching ELA, and Noelle is just starting her first year teaching Social Studies. What makes it particularly good is that they are on the same team and actually their classrooms are just right across the hall from each other! So, I hope and PRAY we have a great school year at UL not only for my 2 daughters, but all the teachers and of course the students! I’ve always put teachers on somewhat of a pedestal, I think it takes a special kind of person, one who loves children and has a good heart, to be a teacher, and I know both my daughters have that in spades!

I was asked earlier this week by one of the mothers if children still need to get yearly checkups once they become teenagers. Well, she asked because another doctor had told her they really didn’t unless there were underlying issues. So, I explained to her my opinion and why I felt that yearly checkups are indeed needed throughout childhood. Over the past 6-12 months, I have picked several cases of high blood pressure ( previously undetected), at least 2 cases of type 2 diabetes that I can recall, several instances of heart murmur, a case of thyroid disease, and several cases of pre-diabetes, not to mention many other things to numerous to mention ( i.e. suspicious moles, scoliosis and other orthopedic things, eye issues, and of course growth and development issues, etc.). Oh, and I can’t forget the case of testicular growth/cancer that we picked up on a routine exam a couple of years ago. So, from experience from doing this work for over 40 years, I can say without question yearly checkups are indeed important throughout childhood, and to be honest I feel adults should also have regular checkups…Thank you

I just wanted to mention an office visit I had yesterday that is still on my mind. A 4 month old check up, the baby was so social, looking at me, smiling, interacting well, and was blessed to have such a good, caring and loving mother. I love when these 2-4 month old babies are that interactive, it reflects several good things about their care at home. These days it seems that I am seeing more babies with Autism, developmental delays, things of this nature, so my “antenna” is always up when I’m checking these babies. I’m not only checking the physical things during the exam, but I’m also making mental notes about the psychosocial development of the baby as well. It’s very important to pick up these babies early when these issues exist. Anyway, I’m always telling the mothers how important it is to interact with the baby, talk, sing, read to the baby, this helps foster the baby’s psychosocial development. It’s truly one of those things that you get out of it in proportion to what you put in it. There is so much more to taking care of a baby than changing its diaper and/or sticking a bottle in its mouth. Unfortunately, I see the whole spectrum in my practice, there are those babies that are blessed with a loving and caring home environment, and then there are those that are not as fortunate, it’s sad, even after providing care for 40 plus years, the latter situation still bothers me so much, but in contrast when I have an experience like the former it brightens up my whole day!

I just wanted to wish everyone a very happy Father’s Day. A good father is so important to the development of a child. I spend most of my days interacting with the mothers of the children, and many of these mothers are just amazing the way they love and take such good care of their children. They do the grunt work, the hands on work of taking care of the child, but many times in the background there is a loving father that just simply meets his daily obligations and responsibilities, day in and day out, to make life better for his family. Many times it goes unnoticed, he doesn’t draw attention to himself or complain, he just simply shows up, he’s there, and he provides whatever is needed for his family. I want to acknowledge these selfless fathers that put their family first. May God bless them..
