✅ Students entering 7th grade need:
• 1 dose of Tdap
• 1 dose of Meningococcal (MCV4) vaccine

✅ Students entering 11th grade need:
• A Meningococcal (MCV4) booster, unless their first dose was given on or after their 16th birthday.

These vaccines help protect your teen from serious illnesses, including meningococcal disease, which can progress quickly and become life-threatening.

🦟 Bug bites are part of summer—but knowing how to care for them can make all the difference! ☀️

Most insect bites and stings are mild and improve within a few days with simple home care.

💙 The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends:
✔️ Wash the area with soap and water.
✔️ Apply a cool compress to reduce swelling.
✔️ Use 1% hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion for itching.
✔️ An oral antihistamine, such as cetirizine or loratadine, may help relieve itching.
✔️ Encourage your child not to scratch to help prevent infection.

📞 Give us a call if your child develops:
• Increasing redness, warmth, swelling, or pain
• A fever
• Signs of infection (pus, red streaks, or drainage)
• Swelling of the face or lips
• Symptoms that aren’t improving after a few days

🚨 Call 911 immediately if your child has trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, becomes weak or difficult to wake, or has signs of a severe allergic reaction.

Prevention is always the best medicine! Use an age-appropriate insect repellent, dress children in long sleeves and pants when practical, and avoid outdoor activities during peak mosquito hours at dawn and dusk.

🥵 South Georgia summers are no joke! ☀️

With temperatures and humidity soaring, it’s important to know the signs of heat exhaustion and how to protect your child from heat-related illness.

⚠️ Watch for symptoms like:
💧 Muscle cramps
💧 Dizziness
💧 Headache
💧 Nausea or vomiting
💧 Drowsiness
💧 Loss of coordination

Some children are at a higher risk, including those with asthma, heart conditions, kidney conditions, or those taking certain medications.

💙 Help keep your child safe by:
✔️ Offering water often—even before they’re thirsty
✔️ Dressing them in lightweight, light-colored clothing
✔️ Taking frequent breaks in the shade or air conditioning
✔️ Avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day
✔️ Never leaving a child alone in a vehicle—even for a minute

💙 Why is the vitamin K shot recommended for newborns?

Vitamin K plays an essential role in helping the body stop bleeding. While older children and adults get vitamin K from food and healthy bacteria in the gut, newborns are born with very low levels of vitamin K and can’t produce enough on their own.

That’s why babies receive a vitamin K shot shortly after birth. The shot helps prevent Vitamin K Deficiency Bleeding (VKDB), a rare but serious condition that can cause life-threatening bleeding, including bleeding in the brain.

Although oral vitamin K is used in some countries, it does not protect against VKDB as reliably as the injection and often requires multiple doses. For this reason, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends the vitamin K shot for all newborns.

If you’re expecting a baby or have questions about newborn care, we’re here to help. Talk with your pediatrician—we’re happy to discuss the benefits of vitamin K and answer any questions you may have.
