Today we are celebrating our sweet and caring Shelby O’Neal, RVT. Shelby has been with our family now for 5 years and has spent the last 35 years working in the veterinary world. 30 years ago she became a registered veterinary technician and she hasn’t turned back since.

Shelby loves to advocate for all the pets and enjoys educating the clients on their pets care. She credits working with a great team adds to the love of her job. Her struggles come when she realizes she can’t take all the babies home with her and she holds a special place in her heart for the Chihuahuas nobody else wants to handle….they are small but can be mighty 😁

When Shelby isn’t at work you can usually find her cooking and if you haven’t had her cooking you are definitely missing out, she’s an incredible cook. Between caring for 6 dogs, 3 donkeys, 3 goats, and 1 horse she travels as much as she can and loves watching football.

We want to thank Shelby for all her hard work and dedication to TMAH! ❣️

Our first veterinary technician spotlight is David Reese, RVT & Owner!

He has owned McDuffie Animal Hospital for 18 years and has been a licensed veterinarian technician for 22 years but has been in the vet world for a total of 34 years. When you ask him what he loves most about his job he would definitely say being able to assist in surgeries and do anesthesia. Being able to help make your pet feel better definitely makes for a great day but everyday is not that way. Sometimes he has to talk with clients about quality of life for their pet and walk them through the steps of the decisions they must make. Those are the parts of his job that are the hardest. If he had to choose a favorite breed of dog to work with he says he loves hunting breeds like Labs and Boykin’s. On the weekends, you can find David working on the farm, spending time with his family, and caring for all of his dogs, horses, chickens and the occasional wildlife rehab.

It’s National Veterinary Technicians week, and we want to highlight and celebrate our technicians! When you think of taking your pet to a veterinary clinic most people only think about the veterinarian but there are not many (if any) clinics that could run without their support staff. In human medicine you have an individual for each skill set, that is not the case in veterinary medicine.

Veterinary technicians are:
• Phlebotomists
• Radiology technicians
• Laboratory technicians
• Customer service representatives
• Anesthesiologist
• Nurses
• Dental hygienists
• Surgical technicians
• Ultrasound technicians
• Pharmacy technicians
• Medical billing

Veterinary technicians do all of the things that the titles of the people above do yet they only hold one, singular title and are often overlooked despite everything they do. So next time you see any veterinary technicians tell them thank you and that you appreciate everything they do! And remember we are all human in the veterinary world and many of us are doing everything all at once so be kind! This week we will be spotlighting our amazing technicians and showing them how much we appreciate what they do to keep our business running so we can keep your pets healthy! 🐾❤️
