SOULSPRING WELLNESS JOURNAL™ | VOLUME 01 | ISSUE 05

THE LONG GAME

We’ve spent the last several weeks having a conversation about GLP-1 medications.

Not from a place of fear. Not from a place of judgment. And definitely not from a place of telling anyone what they should or shouldn’t do with their body.

But informed decisions require us to ask more than one question.

Yes, weight loss may happen.

But what happens next?

What happens when the medication becomes long-term? What happens if access changes, insurance stops covering it, or you decide you no longer want to take it? How do we protect muscle, support nutrition, and think beyond the number on the scale?

Health is never just one number.

The long game matters.

And before making any decision about our bodies, we deserve to look at the whole picture.

This is the final entry in our five-part GLP-1 series. I hope the series has created space for curiosity, better questions, and conversations that go deeper than the hype.

Evidence over hype. Education over fear. Curiosity over judgment.

I think we spend so much of our lives trying to control the future.

We plan. We organize. We overthink.

We try to make the right decisions so we can somehow guarantee the outcome we want.

As if, with enough preparation, we can protect ourselves from the unknown.

But we can’t.

And I know that in one of the deepest ways a person can know it.

I lost my firstborn child.

If someone had shown me the future before I became a mother and told me what was coming, I honestly don’t believe I would have chosen motherhood at all.

The thought of that kind of pain may have been enough to stop me.

But what a loss that would have been.

Because I always wanted to be a mother. I knew it in my bones. I knew I would be a good mom.

And I was.

I am.

The truth is, we don’t get to see the whole story before we decide to live it.

We don’t get to control every outcome. We don’t get to plan our way around every heartbreak. And no amount of organizing, worrying, or trying to think ten steps ahead can guarantee that life will unfold the way we expect it to.

The future has always been an illusion of control.

The only place we actually have any real power is here.

In this moment.

In the choices we make today.

In the people we love while they’re here.

The work isn’t figuring out exactly what happens next.

The work is learning to be okay with not knowing.

To loosen our grip.

To stop trying to control a future that hasn’t happened yet.

And to trust ourselves enough to know that whatever life brings, we will meet it when we get there.

Because that’s all any of us can really do.

Be here now.

And let the unknown be unknown.

🤍Mel

Some women change the world so profoundly that we almost forget there was a time before their voice.

Gloria Steinem was one of those women.

At my core, I am a woman-loving, girls’ girl, feminist. I believe in women. I believe in our voices, our choices, our power, our right to take up space and our responsibility to stand beside one another.

And Gloria had a lot to do with that.

She was part of the generation of women who refused to accept the world exactly as it had been handed to them. She asked questions. She challenged systems. She gave women permission to think bigger, speak louder, and recognize that we were never meant to apologize for wanting equality.

Her work helped plant seeds in women like me, seeds that continue to grow across generations.

Thank you, Gloria, for helping so many of us find our voice. For reminding us that sisterhood matters. For making us think. For standing up. For never asking women to shrink themselves to make the world more comfortable.

Your voice may be gone from this earth, but what you awakened in women will live on.

Rest peacefully, beautiful woman.

We’ll take it from here.

May we continue the work.
May we continue to lift one another.
May we continue to raise our voices.

And may we never forget the women who helped us understand that we had every right to use them.

Rest in power, Gloria.

THE OTHER SIDE OF GLP-1
Beyond Weight Loss and the Number on the Scale

We all know about the common side effects by now.

Nausea. Constipation. Vomiting. Diarrhea. Digestive issues.

But that is not the whole story.

Because while the conversation around GLP-1 medications often centers around weight loss, there are other risks and side effects that deserve to be part of the conversation too.

Pancreatitis.

Gallbladder problems.

Severe gastrointestinal complications.

Dehydration and potential kidney problems.

Loss of muscle and lean mass.

Hair loss.

Changes in vision for some people with diabetes.

And then there are the questions that are still emerging.

Questions around desire.

Motivation.

Pleasure.

Libido.

And whether some people are experiencing changes that go far beyond their relationship with food.

Now, this is important.

Not everyone taking a GLP-1 medication will experience these side effects or complications. And some of the emerging conversations still need more research before we can fully understand what is happening.

But I don’t believe that means we should avoid talking about them.

People deserve the full picture.

Because the number on the scale doesn’t tell us what is happening to someone’s muscle.

Their pancreas.

Their gallbladder.

Their digestion.

Their kidneys.

Their hair.

Their energy.

Or their quality of life.

These medications may offer meaningful benefits for some people. And serious risks can also be part of the story.

Both things can be true.

This isn’t about telling anyone what they should do with their body.

It’s about making sure we’re asking better questions.

And making decisions with our eyes wide open.

5 things that make me happy:

1) this guy, his name is Pac (like Tupac), he’s an almost 10 yr old rescue from Chatsworth animal shelter. He’s been my rider since he was 1. Caring for him + our daily walks + all our adventures helped pull me out of the deepest, darkest depressive episode in my life. He’s a true gift and one of my life’s soul mates.

2) the ocean, she’s Mother ~ container and source of life, she’s wild, deep, vast, nurturing, beautiful, salty, and sublime. Just like me. Low tide I dig in. I sift thru the sand, turn over rocks and explore the edges. Theirs and mine. High tide I swirl, sway and stomp to move the hard and heavy. Sunsets = love + gratitude. Sunrises = inspiration + intentions. She is my church and my therapist’s office.

3) the mountains, the formidable ones. Pushing us to new heights. Sometimes unreachable. Teaching us acceptance, revealing shadows and an understanding of darkness before the dawn. They’re like the spirit guides and ancestors, you don’t always have a view of them but they are always present. Holding strong. Influencing and protecting without a single ask from us.

4) good skincare, because it’s our barrier that protects everything within. Sunscreens, moisturizers, exfoliants, peels, masks, tonics, ampoules, sprays and oils - I love it all and I’m not going to surgically alter it without medical need. What’s mine is mine. I accept it fully and will care for it naturally, always. I’m an esthetician so this is my lane.

5) women, I’m a girls girl through and through. I will guide your spirit and nurture your body. I will protect your heart and balance your solar plexus. I will create space for safety, build your trust and confront what hurts you. We can walk straight thru the fire together. I got you. I believe you. And I believe in you. We are divine and I will never let you forget it.

My son, my friends and my family make me happy too. They’re always a given.

Enjoy this beautiful Sunday. I hope you find some happiness today.
