Today, Three Rivers Health leaders announced plans to build a new 27,000-square-foot medical office building on its campus, creating a centralized location for key outpatient services and marking a major step forward in the hospital's recovery following the severe storm that damaged portions of the campus in March, when a tornado ripped through the community.

Once completed, the medical office building will house a Rural Health Clinic with family medicine, internal medicine and obstetrics and gynecology services. The facility will also include hematology/oncology, an infusion center and a wound care clinic with a hyperbaric chamber. Designed to support both patient comfort and care delivery, the medical office building will feature modern reception and waiting areas, a walkway to the hospital and capacity for future expansion.

For the Kohlhoff family, working at Beacon Three Rivers Health is more than a job — it's something they get to share together.

Marci Kohlhoff has cared for families in labor and delivery since 1999, serving as both a bedside and clinical charge nurse. Today, her work is even more meaningful because three familiar faces are part of the Beacon team alongside her.

Her sons — Landon, Aiden and Greyson — all work in the dietary department, helping care for patients while balancing their college studies. Landon and Aiden joined Beacon last fall, and Greyson followed this spring.

For the Kohlhoffs, working at Beacon means serving the community they call home while supporting one another along the way. Whether they're helping welcome a new baby or preparing meals for patients, each family member plays an important role in creating a positive experience for those we serve.

Are you ready to make a difference close to home? From clinical care to support services, every role at Beacon helps create exceptional patient experiences. Join our team and build a career with purpose: careers.beaconhealthsystem.org

A helpful update for patients and visitors: Starting next week, Beacon hospitals will transition to cashless payments across their campuses. This means cash will no longer be accepted for medical services, outpatient pharmacies, cafeterias and gift shops.

Several easy payment options will continue to be available. Patients and visitors may use credit or debit cards, mobile pay (such as Apple Pay or Google Pay), prepaid cards, HSA/FSA cards for eligible medical expenses and checks for patient account payments and some retail purchases. Most hospitals will have cash-to-card kiosks available. The kiosks allow cash to be converted into a prepaid card that can be used anywhere in the hospital as well as anywhere major card brands are accepted.

Today, Elkhart General Hospital leadership announced an expansion and renovation of the Emergency and Trauma Center, an investment designed to increase capacity, reduce wait times and enhance the patient experience at one of the region’s busiest emergency departments.

The $37 million project will move through planning, design, permitting and pre-construction preparation throughout 2026, with major construction that patients and the community will see expected to begin in 2027. Upon completion in 2028, the Emergency Department will feature an expanded trauma center footprint with upgraded care spaces and equipment, private patient rooms in place of the current mix of private rooms and semi-private bays, four dedicated behavioral health rooms and improved access for ambulances and patients arriving by car.

Elkhart General Hospital is Elkhart County’s only verified trauma center. As a critical safety net for the community, this means 24/7 access to care for serious injuries, vehicle crashes, strokes and falls.

Abby Hostetler was working the front desk at Three Rivers Health Hospital when she heard the severe weather alert on the scanner. As she made a final sweep of the lobby, that's when she saw him.

She recognized 86-year-old Del Eastes right away as he slowly walked through the doors. But the long-time snack bar volunteer didn't look well, so she hurried over to help him. Looking out the window, the scene turned terrifying.

A tornado was barreling through the community.

"I couldn't go hide, I had to go help him," Abby said. She looped her arm around Del's and led him through the lobby, swiftly shielding him with her body in a corner. That's when storm winds pushed through the building.

The doors blew in. Windows shattered. Floor mats lifted off the ground, artwork was ripped off the walls, and debris was flying in at them.

Abby held Del against the wall until the tornado had passed.

"She knew exactly what she was doing. She's really kind of a hero," Del said. "I'd say she saved my life."

And it was all caught on camera.
