A new non-opioid pain medication is changing the conversation around acute pain.
In 2025, the FDA approved suzetrigine (Journavx), a first-in-class, non-opioid medication for adults experiencing moderate-to-severe acute pain.
Unlike opioids, suzetrigine works by targeting a pain-signaling pathway in the peripheral nervous system before those pain signals reach the brain.
That makes this an important development in pain medicine, but there’s an important distinction patients need to understand:
New does not mean right for every type of pain.
Suzetrigine is FDA-approved for acute pain. That does not mean it is approved for every chronic pain condition, neuropathy, or long-term nerve pain.
At Nerve & Pain Institute, we believe pain treatment starts with understanding what is causing the pain, then determining which treatment options make sense for the individual patient.
There is no single treatment that is right for everyone.
