Scientists may have uncovered another important link between gum disease and heart health.
New research presented at the American Heart Association Basic Cardiovascular Sciences Scientific Sessions 2026 suggests that bacteria responsible for severe gum disease may contribute to calcific aortic valve stenosis (CAVS)—the most common heart valve disease in adults.
Researchers found that Porphyromonas gingivalis, a major bacterium linked to periodontitis, was present in significantly higher amounts inside calcified aortic valves removed during valve replacement surgery.
In laboratory studies and mouse models, this bacterium triggered inflammation, promoted calcium buildup within the aortic valve, and accelerated valve narrowing. Blocking the IL-1β inflammatory pathway significantly reduced valve calcification in animal studies, identifying a potential target for future treatments.
Calcific aortic valve stenosis develops gradually as calcium deposits stiffen the aortic valve, making it harder for blood to flow from the heart. As the disease progresses, it can cause fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, heart failure, and may eventually require valve replacement surgery. Currently, there are no approved medications proven to prevent or slow its progression.
It is important to note that these findings are preliminary and are based on analyses of human heart valve tissue, laboratory experiments, and animal studies. They do not yet prove that gum disease causes heart valve disease or that treating gum disease can prevent it in people. However, the research adds to growing evidence that oral health and cardiovascular health are closely connected.
The takeaway is simple: maintaining good oral hygiene, treating periodontal disease early, and attending regular dental check-ups are important not only for protecting teeth and gums, but also for supporting overall health.
