Congratulations to Shaely Cannon for earning a place on the 2026 Student Advisory Board for Women in Optometry! We love seeing locals excel and we hope she brings her talents back to our area in a few years.
"Shaely Cannon is a second-year student at the Southern College of Optometry (SCO). She grew up in McDonough, Georgia, and attended the University of Georgia.
Cannon discovered the career path after being inspired by her optometrist, Lindsay Martin, OD. She confirmed her interest through shadowing and work as an optometric technician. She is considering working with pediatric patients or opening a private practice.
She serves as secretary for her student government for the class of 2028 and is social media coordinator for Gamma Omicron. She belongs to Beta Sigma Kappa, the Fellowship of Christian Optometrists, the Dry Eye and Aesthetics Club and the Georgia State Club. Cannon also tutors, writes for the Student Life Blogs on the SCO website and mentors prospective students. She has received the Dr. Charles A. Callaway Scholarship and the Dr. Charles L. Haine Human Physiology Award.
In her free time, Cannon reads, sings musical theater and classical pieces, solves sudoku, walks the Greenbelt in Memphis, explores new restaurants and spends time with friends and family."
Women In Optometry welcomes the 2026 Student Advisory Board, featuring one student from each North American optometry school.
