We promote kidney health and assist people with kidney disease in Northwest Ohio. Events Committee - We have 3 premier fund raising events.

Volunteer Opportunities

Kidney Krusaders - is a broad umbrella of volunteers that includes a variety of opportunities. These opportunities will have a direct impact on patients and assist in educating the community about kidney disease. This will be accomplished through spending time with our dialysis patients playing games, educational quizzes and other fun learning opportunities, either monthly

or quarterly at dialysis units. Other events include speaking to civic groups or other organizations; and being a representative at health fairs. Kidney Kids - is a club for children who either have kidney disease or have a family member that is affected by kidney disease. The club with provide educational and group activities for kids to better understand kidney disorder and how it can affect them and their families. BellaBlossoms - is a group of altruistic and creative woman enterprising for the growth of KFNWO's mission to raise funds and awareness. We are an informal group of women who want to help our neighbors facing kidney disease. We believe in the powerful impact women can make when they join together to make a difference while enjoying each other and life. Kilometers for Kidneys, Kidney Klassic and The Annual Wine Affair. The Events Committee leads these events towards the success in raising money for our patients. Renal Resource Peers (RRP) and Transplant Assisting Transplant (TAT) - are peer to peer support programs. Trained volunteers give support to patients and/or their families by listening to their concerns. Volunteers are matched with patients in a confidential manner. This program is not medical related; it is intended for emotional support. Office Volunteers - are always welcome to help with answering phones, data entry and other small office duties. Team up with the KFNWO staff and other volunteers as we meet the need of our patients. Join us on Saturday, Aug. 15 for Black Men's Wellness Day at Scott High School. There will be a large number of free health screenings, including the Kidney Foundation performing A1C screenings with The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. Hours are 7-noon but arrive early for shorter wait times.

We welcome local attorney and father of two Eric Simpson to our board! Eric and his wife were thrown into the kidney world quite unexpectedly three years ago when their twins became seriously ill and had to be hospitalized. They are better now and being carefully monitored, but kidney disease will always be a part of their story. Eric has a passion for giving back and we welcome his time and talents to our board.

We are grateful to the brothers of Omega Psi Phi -Xi Tau Chapter for the invitation to attend the Vince Davis health and wellness event this past Saturday at the former Martin Luther King school for boys. We screened for A1C, blood pressure and blood sugar while having great conversations about kidney health and the importance of managing diabetes and high blood pressure.

Our student volunteer from The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences, Ziarat Gul, is a U.S. military veteran from Afghanistan who speaks 6 languages. These student volunteers and their preceptors are amazing people who make this outreach possible.

The members of Northern Light Lodge #40 F&AM in Maumee presented a check to Kelly Mofield, executive director of the Kidney Foundation of Northwest Ohio, last night. The $10,400 check represents the proceeds from the group's 28th annual pancake breakfast in April. These funds will be used to support kidney patients in Lucas County and to perform health screenings for those at risk. We cannot thank the Masons enough for their dedicated support over these many years.

The National Institutes of Health is recruiting adults (18+) who have primary or genetic focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) to participate in a paid Phase 2 clinical trial at the NIH's hospital in Bethesda, Maryland. Participants must have their diagnosis confirmed through kidney biopsy and must not have kidney disease later than stage 3A. This strict criteria has been making the search for trial participants exceptionally difficult. People who have FSGS caused by diabetes or other factors will not qualify. Participants who do qualify will be paid up to $2,000 and have travel covered for trips to Bethesda, MD for them and a companion. They will also receive a promising new drug therapy with few identified side effects. Finding families with a genetic history of FSGS would be helpful. Help us spread the word!

Join us on Monday, April 13 from 5-7 p.m. at the Perrysburg Heights Community Center for free health screenings in partnership with UToledo Health and The University of Toledo College of Pharmacy & Pharmaceutical Sciences. The Halim Clinic and Islamic Food Bank of Toledo will also be on site to provide services. We love a good partnership!
