Marian Jane (Rustic) Bay
March 16th, 1935 – May 19th, 2026

Marian joined her beloved husband in heaven on May 19th, 2026. She passed peacefully in her home within a view of her backyard where a cardinal suddenly appeared and lingered about. She led a full life being the matriarch of the two generations of family.

Marian was born to loving parents Charles and Mildred Rustic (Warnke) in Scranton, PA. After struggling through the Great Depression, her family sold whatever possessions that wouldn’t fit in their car and traveled to Pensacola, FL in 1942 to pursue a new job. She flourished in school, playing basketball and volleyball in the Girls’ Sports Club, and the YMCA’s Y-Teens Club while excelling in math, biology and chemistry. She was inducted into the National Honor Society her senior year at Pensacola High School. She earned an associate in science degree from Pensacola Junior College while working in the Sears credit department. She spent the following year studying medical technology and pathology at the Baptist Hospital which qualified her to take the National ASCP test and start her career as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MedTech) at the same hospital.

After friends arranged a blind date with Naval Aviation Cadet Barton H. Bay, she fell in love and got married a year later April 25th, 1959. As a Navy wife she moved around the country – Norfolk, Key West, Memphis, Westminster and San Diego while raising two children and being the head of household during Bart’s numerous deployments at sea.

Summer vacations were visiting their hometown family and friends in Florida and Ohio, in alternating years. After Bart completed his active service, they settled in his hometown of Toledo in 1974. She restarted her MedTech career at the Medical College of Ohio (now UTMC), retiring at the age of 60 after 19 years of service and enthralled with the idea of sleeping in everyday! The highlight of the summers were the annual weeks at Miley’s Resort on Lake Bellaire and tent camping on Lake Huron (Ipperwash and Pinery Provincial Parks, Ontario).

She thoroughly enjoyed her retirement years, tending to her six grandchildren and pursuing her hobbies. Her most passionate of which was producing beautiful detailed handmade greeting cards for all holidays and special occasions. She diligently would stamp and color images, cutting-out layers, gluing embellishments, embossing and painting each unique card. This was an especially arduous task leading up to Christmas, given she had a wide circle of family and friends. She was also passionate about genealogy and finding out about her family history.

One of the most meaningful chapters of her later years was the result of her years-long search to learn more about her father’s history. Through a DNA test, she discovered that he had been born in Messina, Sicily as Rosario Rustica. That revelation led her to an extended family she never knew existed, and she was blessed to meet them and form a connection with a part of her family story that had long been unknown. It added a beautiful new branch to the family tree she cherished so deeply.

Marian was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 59 years, Bart. She is survived by her children Beverly (Gregory) Zmuda and Brian (Linda) Bay; grandchildren Zachary, Alexa, Zohn, and Aubrey Zmuda; and Brianna and Brenton Bay. She is also survived by many lifelong friends. The family gives special thanks to Hospice of Northwest Ohio for enabling her to spend her final days comfortably in her home. She was a dedicated member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and a patron of Walbridge Park.

Visitation will be at Walter Funeral Home, 4653 Glendale Ave. on Tuesday, May 26th from 4-8 pm. Visitation on Wednesday, May 27th at 10am will be at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church with funeral service to follow at 11am. Donations may be made to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church or Hospice of Northwest Ohio.

She also cooked, cleaned and babysat children to bring in money while staying active in her daughters’ life. Rose also worked on weekends at catered affairs. She loved to sew and make the girls matching dresses for the holidays. She was active in Girl Scouts with her daughters. But her love was cooking and baking. After the church closed, they became members of the First Presbyterian Church of Maumee. She prepared the monthly Communion Table for over 20 years making sure the tablecloth was starched and pressed. They had many friends at church and she enjoyed making special meals and desserts especially lemon meringue with homemade pie crust. Summer months were spent camping throughout the United States in a travel trailer. She had to plan all meals and rarely did they eat at a restaurant. Phyllis Jean Cady

October 22nd, 1940 – May 9th, 2026

Phyllis Cady of Maumee, OH was called home to the Lord on May 9th, 2026 after a decade-long battle with dementia. Born October 22nd, 1940 to Harry and Rachel (Birchfield) Mann at a coal miner’s camp in Kilsythe, WV, Phyllis was the third of four siblings. She grew up in the Appalachian Mountains of central West Virginia until age twelve when her parents relocated to Toledo, OH in hopes of better career opportunities for her father, who had been a coal miner all his life. Life was difficult for a poor Appalachian family trying to create roots in a new place, and Phyllis often recalled how much of a hindrance her thick accent was while trying to adapt to Northern ways of life; an accent which never fully faded and that we will remember fondly. She was an honors graduate of Whitmer High School in 1958, and went on to marry Carl “Tony” Cady of Toledo, OH on August 30th, 1960. They were blessed with three boys: Jeff, Ron and Terry. Phyllis was among the first employees of W.T. Grant Co. at Miracle Mile, then spent the majority of her adult career with Osterman Jewelers. She worked there for over 25 years, working her way up to Credit Manager and overseeing numerous locations until her retirement. Phyllis and Tony resided in Maumee, OH for over 50 years until his passing in 2015.

Phyllis had many qualities that made her so special to us. She was incredibly handy, and could tinker with or fix any problem placed before her. She was a big history buff with a special interest in our family genealogy, racking up dozens of binders tracing our bloodline; emphasizing the importance of knowing where and what we came from. She had a known obsession with sweets, including oatmeal cream pies, black raspberries and virtually anything chocolate. She was a devout Christian, serving as a Sunday School teacher at Calvary Assembly in Maumee, OH, and later was a cherished member of Calvary Bible Chapel in Toledo, OH. Phyllis loved spending summers back in WV at her second home which she shared with her sister Shirley. Affectionately known as “the Palace”, she had many fond memories up on War Ridge Mountain and enjoyed hosting her loved ones for gas station chicken, cookouts, thrifting and long talks among the fireflies underneath the evening Appalachian sky. Most importantly, Phyllis cherished her family; whose needs and wishes were her top priority. She had a way of creating magic out of very little, and poured her heart into her children and grandchildren, who will miss her deeply.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Rachel (Birchfield) Mann; brothers Edgel and Edward Mann; husband Carl “Tony” Cady; brother-in-law Ray Mowery; dear friend Tom Root; many cherished dogs whom she treated as children; and her loving son, Jeff, who she dreamed of reuniting with someday. She is survived by her sister, Shirley Mowery; two of her sons, Ron (Christine) and Terry Cady; her three grandchildren, Jordan (Matthew) Wilcox, Jacob and Joel Cady; dear friends Mary Ann Root and Cherie Geisler; many loving cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends; and her soon-to-be first great-grandchild, Lucas Paul Wilcox, who is due in September and will always know what an incredible great-grandmother he had.

Family and friends can gather on Friday, May 15th from 10:00am-12:00pm with a funeral service to follow at Walter Funeral Home: 4653 Glendale Ave, Toledo, OH 43614. Funeral procession and burial will take place at 1:00pm at Toledo Memorial Park Cemetery: 6382 Monroe St, Sylvania, OH 43560. There will also be a luncheon for all who wish to attend beginning at 2:30pm at Calvary Bible Chapel: 3740 W Alexis Rd, Toledo, OH 43623. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Christian Appalachian Project at www.christianapp.org in Phyllis’ name.

Life is old there, older than the trees
Younger than the mountains, blowing like a breeze…”
