If you or someone you know has tried using hearing aids only to give up in frustration, it may be because a "real-ear measurement" was never completed as part of the care plan. Real-ear measurement is a test of the hearing aids' fit and programming that is completed while the patient is wearing them. The test answers these questions: "Is the patient actually receiving amplification from the hearing aids as programmed by the healthcare provider for the patent's specific needs? Is the patient actually getting the best possible benefit from these hearing aids?" If the results show a "no" answer, the healthcare provider can fine tune the program settings to improve the way the hearing aids work for the patient.

One of our patients recently called to ask if her Oticon hearing aid charger was rated as "dual voltage" meaning it was ready to be used on her upcoming trip to Scotland without her needing to purchase a voltage converter.

The answer is "yes." We let her know that Oticon chargers are sold internationally and support voltage ranges between 100V-240V. In Scotland the voltage output from the wall outlets is 230V, so she would be all set to use her charger "as is" - no voltage converter needed. She had already purchased a wall plug adapter for the trip. So now, she can simply plug her Oticon charger's power block (block you plug into the outlet) into her UK plug adapter or leave the power block at home and plug her charger's cable directly into the USB port on her UK plug adapter.

****One more thing to note. Since her Oticon charger is a "smartcharger" meaning it contains a large built-in Lithium-Ion battery, she will need to keep it in her in her carry-on bag. Airline regulations prohibit batteries like the ones inside her charger from being packed in checked luggage due to the potential fire risk.

80 years ago, a cemetery was built in the Netherlands to bury the bodies of nearly 18,000 American soldiers killed during missions that ultimately liberated the Netherlands from 5 years of German occupation during WW II. From day 1, and 80 years later, Dutch residents have adopted and maintained the gravesites out of deep appreciation for the sacrifice of these soldiers. A touching read before heading into Memorial Day weekend.
