The Fourth of July can be a stressful time for many pets between the fireworks, loud noises, visitors, travel, and changes in routine. This can be overwhelming, especially for pets who already struggle with anxiety during storms or celebrations.

If your pet may need medication or support before the holiday, now is the time to schedule an appointment. Planning ahead gives your veterinarian time to evaluate your pet, discuss safe options, and make sure you have what you need before the fireworks begin.

A few pet safety tips to keep in mind:
• Keep pets indoors during fireworks
• Make sure collars and ID tags are secure and up to date
• Create a quiet, comfortable space away from windows and loud noise
• Do not bring pets to fireworks displays
• Keep doors, gates, and windows secured when guests are coming and going
• Watch for dropped food, alcohol, sparklers, glow sticks, and other holiday hazards
• Take dogs out for potty breaks before fireworks begin
• Never give human medication to your pet unless directed by your veterinarian

Losing a beloved animal is one of the hardest parts of loving them.

For many families, pets and horses are part of daily life, routines, memories, and family stories. When that bond changes or comes to an end, the grief can feel very real and very heavy.
The American Association of Equine Practitioners has shared a helpful list of pet loss and grief support resources, including hotlines, support groups, and online resources for those who need someone to talk to.

These resources are not emergency mental health services, but they may be a helpful place to start for anyone navigating the loss of a pet or horse.

Spring is a great time for horse owners to review their vaccination plan.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners, also known as AAEP, provides an Adult Horse Vaccination Chart that separates vaccines into two main categories: core vaccinations and risk-based vaccinations.

Core vaccinations are recommended for all horses because they protect against diseases that may be widespread, severe, contagious, legally required, or have public health importance. Risk-based vaccines depend on the individual horse, travel schedule, exposure risk, age, use, region, and overall health.

This is why horse vaccine plans should be developed with a veterinarian. A pasture companion, broodmare, show horse, trail horse, and frequently traveling performance horse may not all need the same exact vaccine plan.

The AAEP chart is a helpful resource for horse owners, but it is not a replacement for a veterinary recommendation based on your horse’s specific needs.

May 20 is National Rescue Dog Day, a day set aside to raise awareness for shelter dogs, encourage adoption, and honor the incredible impact rescue dogs have on the lives of the people who love them.

Founded in 2018, National Rescue Dog Day helps shine a light on dogs who have been abused, abandoned, surrendered, or overlooked, and reminds us that so many of them are waiting for a second chance.

Rescue dogs come with all kinds of stories. Some need time, patience, training, and medical care as they adjust to a new home. Others seem to know right away that they have found their person. Either way, they deserve compassion, consistency, and the chance to feel safe.

If you have recently adopted a rescue dog, a veterinary visit is an important first step. A wellness exam can help review vaccine history, parasite prevention, nutrition, behavior concerns, dental health, and any medical needs that may not be obvious right away.

Flea and tick prevention is not one size fits all!

What works well for one pet may not be the best choice for another. A dog who spends time hiking, running through tall grass, visiting dog parks, or living with other pets may need a different prevention plan than a mostly indoor cat or a senior pet with health concerns.

Age, weight, species, lifestyle, medical history, and household exposure all matter when choosing the right product.

This is especially important for cats, because some flea and tick products made for dogs can be dangerous for them. Before choosing an over the counter product, it is always best to talk with your veterinarian first.

At Oliver Mobile Veterinary Services, we help pet owners choose prevention that makes sense for their animal, their home, and their lifestyle.

Spring pasture can be a wonderful thing for horses, but for some, especially those with metabolic concerns, insulin dysregulation, or a history of laminitis, lush grass can create real risks.

This article from The Horse does a great job explaining how pasture sugars change throughout the day, why some grasses may be higher risk, and how grazing plans may need to be adjusted for certain horses. It also notes that sugar levels are often lowest just before sunrise and can peak later in the day after photosynthesis.

A few helpful takeaways for horse owners:
• Pasture is not automatically bad for every horse
• Horses with EMS, insulin dysregulation, or laminitis history may need closer management
• Grazing time, grass type, season, weather, and plant stress can all matter
• A grazing muzzle, limited turnout, or shaded pasture area may help reduce risk for some horses
• Hay testing is often more reliable than trying to guess pasture sugar levels

Every horse is different, so pasture access should be based on the individual horse’s health, body condition, workload, and risk factors.

Dr. Oliver recently had the chance to return to her hometown of Adrian, Michigan for Career Day at Alexander Elementary School, and this one was extra special!

On April 23, 2026, she joined her dad to talk with students about veterinary medicine, animal care, and what it means to spend your life working with animals. It was a full-circle moment, because back in 1985, Dr. Oliver attended a Career Day with him as a child.

In the black and white photo, Dr. Oliver is second from the left, standing with her sister, Liz, and family friend, Kara. Years later, she is still learning from the best.

A good reminder to us how early interests, family influence, and real-life experiences can help shape a career!

Thank you to Alexander Elementary School for welcoming us, and thank you to all of the students who asked great questions and showed such excitement for animals and veterinary medicine.

As many local youth riders head to The All American Youth Show this week and others begin their show season, this felt like a good reminder.

So much work goes into preparing for show season. The early mornings, long practices, grooming, hauling, nerves, excitement, and everything in between. It is easy to focus only on the outcome, but there is so much value in the journey too.

A positive attitude matters in the barn, in the trailer, in the show ring, and in how we support the young riders learning through every experience.

Good luck to all of the riders, families, trainers, and horses kicking off show season. Enjoy the ride, be proud of the work you have put in, and remember to take in the moments along the way.

Oliver Mobile Veterinary Services is cheering you on!

World Veterinary Day is today and a good time to recognize the people behind the work!

We’re celebrating Dr. Oliver and all of her fellow veterinarians who care for animals day in and day out. They do a lot more than appointments and treatments. They help pet owners make informed decisions, catch problems early, and show compassion during some really hard moments too.

Dr. Oliver has built her practice around making care easier on both pets and their people by bringing veterinary care right to the home. That approach makes a real difference, especially for animals that do better in a familiar environment.

We’re thankful for Dr. Oliver and for all of the veterinary professionals serving animals and families every day.
