🪦What Is an Outer Burial Container?

When a casket is buried, many cemeteries require an outer burial container to surround the casket. Its purpose is to help support the weight of the earth and heavy cemetery equipment, helping prevent the ground from settling.

There are two common types:

◽ Burial Liner
A liner supports the weight of the earth but does not have a seal or gasket. Liners are required by many cemeteries.

◼️ Burial Vault
A vault is sealed and gasketed, providing a higher level of protection for the casket from water, soil and the elements. Vaults may be lined with polyurethane or metal.

Every cemetery has its own requirements, so it’s important to understand what is required before making arrangements.

❌ MYTH: Children are too young to attend a funeral and should be kept away from the experience.

✅ FACT: Children can attend funerals, and for many families, being included can be an important part of understanding and processing loss.

Funerals are a part of life. They give us an opportunity to say goodbye, gather with loved ones, and begin the grieving process.

As a parent or caregiver, you know your child best. Consider their age, emotional maturity, relationship with the person who died, and their understanding of death when deciding what is right for them.

🗣If a child does attend, talk with them beforehand about what they may see and experience. Give them the choice to participate in ways that feel comfortable to them—and let them know it's okay to step away if they need a break.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer when it comes to children and funerals. Trust your instincts, answer their questions honestly, and help them feel included and supported. 💙

Embalming is a process that serves three primary purposes:

🧼 Disinfect – Helps reduce the presence of bacteria and other microorganisms.

🌿 Preserve – Temporarily slows the natural changes that occur after death.

🤍 Restore – Helps restore a more natural appearance, allowing family and friends to spend time with their loved one during a visitation or viewing.

❓️Is embalming required❓️
In New York State, embalming is not generally required by state law. However, depending on the arrangements you choose, embalming may be required by a funeral home, cemetery, or other facility.
