🌾 **Meet Laura Stallbaumer, LSCSW**

We’re pretty lucky to have Laura on the Tallgrass team.

Laura is a Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker with a Master’s in Social Work from the University of Kansas, along with a graduate degree in Theology. Her career has included working with adolescents in middle and high schools and foster care, as well as helping young adults and adults navigate relationships, family dynamics, and major life transitions.

At the heart of Laura’s work is connection. She believes in meeting people where they are and helping them better understand who they are, what they’re capable of, and where they want to go from here.

She works with teens and adults experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma and PTSD, difficult relationships, self-criticism, and the patterns that can leave us feeling stuck or like we're getting in our own way. Her approach incorporates CBT, EMDR, trauma-informed care, and Emotion Focused Therapy.

In other words, Laura is here for the messy middle. The relationships that are complicated. The patterns you can't seem to break. The seasons of life when you know something needs to change but aren't quite sure what that change looks like yet.

If you're looking for a therapist who will meet you where you are and help you make sense of where you've been and where you want to go, Laura would love to hear from you.

💙 We're glad she's part of Tallgrass.

Sometimes you don’t need a big announcement. Just a reminder that we’re here. 💙

At Tallgrass Psychological Services, we work with people who are navigating anxiety, trauma, relationships, life transitions, stress, grief, and all the wonderfully complicated things that come with being human.

Therapy doesn’t have to mean something is “wrong” with you. Sometimes you just need a safe place to sort through what’s happening, understand yourself a little better, and figure out what comes next.

We offer therapy in person in Tonganoxie and virtually throughout Kansas.

If you’ve been thinking about reaching out, but haven’t quite taken that step yet, we’d be happy to help you figure out whether we’re a good fit.

No pressure. No judgment. Just a place to start.

If you or someone you care about could use a little support, send us a message. We’re here. 🌾

Your brain is VERY committed to worst-case-scenario storytelling.

One unanswered text becomes, “They’re mad at me.”

One mistake becomes, “I’ve completely screwed everything up.”

One weird symptom becomes, “Something is terribly wrong.”

Catastrophizing is your brain trying to prepare you for danger by imagining every possible way things could go wrong.

Unfortunately, it isn’t always great at remembering that possible doesn’t mean probable.

Sometimes the most helpful question isn’t, “What if everything goes horribly wrong?”

It’s, “What else could be true?”

Your brain can write the disaster movie. You don’t have to buy a ticket. 💙

Do you ever randomly remember something embarrassing you did years ago and immediately want to crawl under the nearest piece of furniture?

Here’s the thing: you’re probably the only person still thinking about it.

We’re all so focused on how we are coming across that we tend to dramatically overestimate how much other people are paying attention to us.

Your brain has a highlight reel.

Other people have their own. 😂

Give yourself permission to stop replaying yours.

Ever notice how one criticism can stick with you all day… but five compliments seem to disappear?

That’s called negative bias.

Our brains are wired to notice potential threats more than positive experiences. It helped our ancestors survive, but today it often means we replay mistakes and overlook what’s actually going well.

The next time something good happens, pause for a few extra seconds and let yourself really take it in. Your brain needs that practice, too.

💙 Your brain is trying to protect you. Sometimes it just needs a gentle reminder that not everything is a threat.

Some days your biggest accomplishment isn’t crossing everything off your to-do list.

Sometimes it’s answering the difficult email.
Taking your medication.
Getting out of bed.
Eating lunch.
Asking for help.
Making the therapy appointment.

Progress isn’t always loud.

Sometimes it whispers,
“I kept going today.”

If that’s where you are today, that counts.

❤️ Give yourself credit for the victories no one else sees!

Happy Friday! ☀️

If this week felt heavy, here's your reminder:

You don't have to "earn" your rest this weekend.

You don't have to finish every task, answer every text, or have everything figured out before you let yourself breathe.

Maybe your goal this weekend isn't to be more productive.
Maybe it's to be a little more present.

Take the walk.
Drink the coffee while it's still hot.
Laugh with your people.
Pet the dog a little longer.
Take the nap.

Whatever fills your cup, we hope you make room for it.

Have a safe, restful weekend. 💙

Of course you’re overwhelmed.

You’re carrying responsibilities, expectations, worries, and a never-ending mental checklist. You’re trying to be a good partner, parent, friend, employee, caregiver… all while somehow finding time to take care of yourself.

Of course you’re tired.

That doesn’t mean you’re failing. It doesn’t mean you’re lazy or not trying hard enough.

Sometimes the first step isn’t pushing yourself to do more. It’s recognizing just how much you’ve already been carrying.

Give yourself a little grace today. You were never meant to carry everything alone. 💚
