Prevention doesn't look like a lecture. It doesn't look like a big, uncomfortable talk at the kitchen table.

Most of the time, it looks like a car ride where nobody's saying much. A late-night check-in. Two people watching the same show without trying to make it into something meaningful. The foundation gets built in moments like those, not in planned conversations but in the everyday ones.

For families with teenagers, that's actually good news. You don't have to orchestrate anything. You just have to keep showing up in the ordinary moments, and let the connection do what it does over time.

This summer, challenge yourself to stay connected with your family. It matters more than you think. PARS can help provide resources if you have questions. Call us at 785-266-8666, email us at [email protected], or visit our website: https://parstopeka.org/prevention-education/

Nobody needs a perfect relationship to make a difference in someone's life. They just need to show up.

For parents of teenagers, "showing up" can feel complicated. High schoolers push back. They pull away. They make it clear they'd rather be anywhere else and then call you when something goes wrong. That tension is normal. What matters is staying available through it.

For teens, having an adult in your corner, someone who pays attention without prying, who's there without hovering, is something worth holding onto. That kind of trust doesn't happen all at once. It builds, slowly, through a lot of small, ordinary moments. And it matters more than most people realize until they really need it.

This summer, challenge yourself to stay connected with your family. It matters more than you think. PARS can help provide resources if you have questions. Call us at 785-266-8666, email us at [email protected], or visit our website: https://parstopeka.org/prevention-education/

This is the season where small things matter more than you think.

When summer hits, everything shifts. Schedules open up, routines loosen, and the people you spend your time with change. For high schoolers, that freedom can feel exciting, and it is. But it also means the environment at home matters more than it does during the school year.

The conversations happening (or not happening) right now are shaping things. The connection between families doesn't have to be perfect, it just has to be real. Prevention isn't a program or a pamphlet. It's what happens in the spaces between everything else, when people who care about each other stay close enough to notice.

This summer, challenge yourself to stay connected with your family. It matters more than you think. PARS can help provide resources if you have questions. Call us at 785-266-8666, email us at [email protected], or visit our website: https://parstopeka.org/prevention-education/
