Not sure where to start? That's a completely reasonable place to be.

Parenting a teenager through the summer isn't something anyone has completely figured out. And for teenagers, knowing how to talk to the adults in your life about things that actually matter isn't always intuitive either.

The good news: you don't have to start from scratch or figure it out all by yourself. There are resources built for exactly these small, practical steps that help families stay connected without it feeling forced or overwhelming. The "Tools to Talk" guide is one of them: https://www.getsmartaboutdrugs.gov/toolstotalk

Start small. Talk often. It adds up.

This summer, challenge yourself to stay connected with your family. It matters more than you think. PARS can help provide resources if you have questions. Call us at 785-266-8666, email us at [email protected], or visit our website: https://parstopeka.org/prevention-education/

Here’s a quick tip for emergencies: If you’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed, call 988 for emotional support and guidance. If you suspect an overdose, call 911 immediately and administer naloxone if it’s available.

Knowing when to choose the right response can make all the difference in getting effective help when it’s needed most.

You don't need the perfect words. You just need to start.

For parents, starting a real conversation with a teenager can feel like defusing a bomb. It's intense, maybe awkward, and likely to blow up. But most of the time, teenagers aren't looking for a perfectly crafted message. They're looking for someone who's willing to try, even imperfectly.

For teens, it's worth knowing that the adults in your life who stumble through hard conversations are doing it because they care. That awkwardness is actually a good sign.

If you're not sure where to begin, the "Tools to Talk" resource from Get Smart About Drugs is built for exactly that: practical, low-pressure ways to start conversations that matter. Find it here: https://www.getsmartaboutdrugs.gov/toolstotalk

The conversations that feel small now are the ones that stick.

For teenagers, it's rarely the big talk that they remember. It's the parent who asked a real question and actually waited for the answer. The adult who didn't freak out. The moment someone said, "I hear you," and meant it.

For parents, those moments are easy to underestimate, especially when the response you get is a shrug or a one-word answer. But something is landing, even when it doesn't show. Consistency in small moments is what keeps the door open. And an open door is everything when something harder comes up.

When routines change, relationships carry more weight.

The school year has a built-in rhythm. Early mornings, consistent schedules, natural check-ins. Summer doesn't. And for high schoolers especially, that shift comes with a lot more independence, more unstructured time, and more decisions to navigate on their own. It's just the reality of this season.

The best thing that can fill the gap left by routine isn't more rules. It's more connection. Families that stay genuinely engaged during the summer months give teenagers something real to come home to, not just a place, but a relationship that makes it easier to make good decisions, even when no one's watching.

This summer, challenge yourself to stay connected with your family. It matters more than you think. PARS can help provide resources if you have questions. Call us at 785-266-8666, email us at [email protected], or visit our website: https://parstopeka.org/prevention-education/
