Employers have spent decades and a lot of money teaching workers to lift with a straight back and bent knees. A systematic review covering more than 17,000 workers found it did nothing. Teaching lifting technique, with or without lifting equipment, did not prevent back pain or disability.
That is a problem for the most common claim in the injury conversation. Someone tweaks their back in the gym and the explanation is automatic: your form broke down. It is the universal scapegoat, but it falls apart the moment you stress test it.
Starting with the definition, the closest thing to one in the literature calls proper technique performing an exercise to maximize adaptation and minimize injury risk. That is circular. It says good technique is whatever does not hurt you, judged after the fact, which gives a coach nothing to measure.
So people act like Justice Potter Stewart and say they know it when they see it: good form means every rep looks identical, robotic, and any deviation is an error. That is also wrong. When you instrument experienced powerlifters and weightlifters squatting and deadlifting at heavy loads with motion analysis, each rep is not a carbon copy of the previous one. They make continuous small adjustments to spinal alignment from rep to rep. In the motor control literature that variability is a feature, a way the body shares load across tissues, not sloppy form. Elite lifters are not robots stamping out identical reps. They are closer to skilled drivers making constant small corrections to stay in the lane.
The thing that actually lowers back pain risk is loading the body gradually (and a little luck). In a separate review, exercise cut the risk of a future back pain episode by roughly 35 to 45 percent, while belts, shoe insoles, and education by itself did nothing. And across sports, strength training reduces injuries to about a third of the rate seen without it, an effect that gets stronger the more you do. The intervention people avoid in the name of safety is the one with the best evidence for preventing injury.
So technique is less about safety and more about efficiency. A rounded back is a different distribution of load, not danger, and whether it costs you depends on whether the load exceeds what you have prepared for, not on the shape itself. We still want your squat to look “good”, because good positioning lets you lift more with less wasted effort. We just do not want you believing a millimeter of deviation is a blown disc waiting to happen.
Instead of a rulebook with one correct picture, we use three questions. A rep is good enough when it is Repeatable, the range and joint angles and tempo reasonably similar from rep to rep while allowing the normal variability every human shows. Efficient, not wasting force that could go into the lift. And when it meets its Points of performance, the pre-specified goal(s) of the exercise, like squatting below parallel. Notice what that leaves out. It does not demand knees behind toes or a permanently neutral spine, because plenty of tasks in life and sport require those positions and none of them is uniquely dangerous on its own.
Good technique is a range, individual to you and changing over time, not a single correct picture. If a rep is repeatable, efficient, and meets the points of performance, it is good enough. Put your attention into executing it with intent instead of policing millimeters.
