A little update on the Communication & Movement Horizons expansion!

We’ve been seeing clients in the expanded space for a few weeks now, while also continuing to unpack, move furniture around, hang things, and get each room set up.

There’s still quite a bit left to do — some rooms are much further along than others 😂 — but we’re already getting a lot of use out of the additional space.

We now have more treatment rooms, a much larger space for PT and movement, more room for groups and trainings, and a waiting room that no longer feels quite so tiny.

It’s been fun seeing everything gradually come together while we’re actually using the space and figuring out what works.

Here’s where things stand so far!

We wrapped up our first AACrew session this week with a trip to Mitsuwa!

AACrew is our social communication group for adults who use AAC. Over the past several weeks, we’ve used virtual field trips to explore different places, talk about what we might do there, practice relevant vocabulary, share ideas and preferences, and make plans together.

Parents and support partners participate too, with opportunities for hands-on AAC coaching while also getting to connect and learn from one another.

For our final week, we took one of those virtual trips into the real world and met up at Mitsuwa.

It was a really fun way to end our first session — and we’re excited to keep AACrew going year-round.

More details about upcoming groups soon!

We’re really excited to be hosting this two-day, hands-on Access iOS course in our new space on August 31 & September 1!

Our team of SLPs will be attending, and we’re so glad our new office gives us the space to host a training like this while learning alongside other professionals in our community.

The course will cover touch access, head tracking, eye tracking, switch control, CVI, the access process, and more.

Spots are limited, and we’d love to have SLPs working in AAC, OTs, PTs, and AT specialists join us for two days of hands-on learning, great discussion, and connecting with others interested in AAC and alternative access.

We hope to see you there!

We’re growing… without leaving home. ❤️

Today, Magda and I continued one of our favorite traditions.

Every time we’ve moved, before anything else goes in, we hang the very first things on the wall.

Just over four years ago, Communication Horizons and Movement Horizons each began as a single treatment room. Three years ago, we expanded into the suite we’ve proudly called home ever since.

Now we’re taking our biggest step yet.

Beginning Monday, we’ll start welcoming clients into our new space… right next door.

One of the things we’re most excited about is how easy the new space will be to access. After coming up the wheelchair ramp and entering through the building’s accessible front door, ours is the very first suite on the left from the lobby.

And from the windows in my new office, I’ll actually be able to see families arriving at the entrance. 😊

This is just phase one. Over the coming weeks, we’ll continue updating our original suite (goodbye carpet! 👋), and then the wall between the two suites will come down to create one connected clinic designed to better serve our community.

It only felt right that the first things on the walls were the people who inspire everything we do.

We can’t wait to welcome you into this next chapter. ❤️

Super proud to be part of a toy adapting event this morning at Buffum TLC.

This came together through a collaboration with my husband (a longtime employee), who helped coordinate an incredible team—donating the toys, bringing in an engineer to develop the adapting instructions, and organizing 12+ employee volunteers to adapt them on-site.

We also partnered with to donate all of the switches, making these toys accessible for students who need alternative access.

Such a meaningful way to head into the weekend. ☺️
Way to go and 🙌

AAC Story Lab 🎬✨

We’re exploring a small-group once-weekly, 6-week summer program for AAC users—and would love your input.

Each week, participants will use their AAC systems to help build stories together based on their own words, ideas, and interests.
As their words are contributed, those ideas become written text within the story—supporting language and literacy development through meaningful reading and re-reading.

Stories come to life using visuals, animation, and audio, with support for a wide range of access methods.

This is also an opportunity to connect alongside other AAC users—sharing ideas and being inspired by one another.

If this sounds like a good fit, you can fill out the interest form here:

Spots will be limited to keep groups small and supportive.

This is something we’ve been hoping to build — a space where adult AAC users can spend time together, connect, and communicate with peers.

Today felt like a first step.

We practiced introducing ourselves, asking and answering questions, and sharing thoughts and opinions — but more importantly, we watched real connection happen.

There was so much patience in the room. People took the time to listen, wait, and make space for each other to communicate.

One moment that stood out: everyone gathered around to watch one group member demonstrate Candy Crush using his head-tracking system — and the group practiced asking “Can I see?” and “Do you want to see?”

Later, the conversation shifted to music — favorite singers, songs, and sharing what they liked.

AAC, connection, and community.

If this is something you’d be interested in for yourself or your family member, feel free to reach out or share this with someone who might be.

We’re excited to welcome Jody Akutagawa, M.S., CF-SLP to the Communication Horizons team! 💙

Jody officially began her Clinical Fellowship with us this week. Many families may recognize her from her graduate internship last summer, where her warmth and natural connection with clients made a lasting impression.

Before becoming an SLP, Jody spent years supporting the South Bay disability community — leading inclusive dance programs for teens and adults with developmental disabilities and assisting early intervention programming through the Leaps & Bounds program at Momentum PTN.

We’re so grateful to have her on our team and can’t wait for more families to get to know her. Please join us in welcoming Jody! ✨

Still feeling energized after ATIA.

Sharing this work—and the stories we’ve created with clients—was incredibly meaningful, but what’s really sticking with me is the enthusiasm and curiosity from the people in the room. So many thoughtful conversations about how this co-constructed narrative approach might grow, shift, and look different in other hands and settings.

At its core, this work is about joining in with what our clients are already communicating or trying to communicate, and building language and literacy from there—through stories, images, sound, and moments of shared joy.

One of my hopes in presenting was simply to plant a seed. This approach is still evolving, and there’s so much I want to keep learning and figuring out. I’m excited to see how others take these ideas, adapt them, and share the stories they create with their own clients.

Grateful for the energy, the openness, and the sense of shared purpose that came out of these sessions—and excited to keep the conversation going. 💛
