Rattlesnakes are a natural part of Southern California, but warmer weather can increase the chance of encountering one on trails, in yards and around homes.

A rattlesnake bite is a medical emergency. Move away from the snake, stay as calm and still as possible, and call 911 immediately. Do not apply ice, use a tourniquet, cut the wound or attempt to capture the snake.

Torrance Memorial’s Emergency Department is equipped to evaluate and treat rattlesnake bites, with CroFab antivenom available through the hospital pharmacy. Additional doses can be coordinated when medically necessary.

Read our blog on the topic or swipe to learn how to reduce your risk, recognize possible symptoms and respond safely after a bite.

Recent news about the FDA authorizing the sale of certain fruit-flavored e-cigarette products has renewed concerns for many parents of teens.

Va**ng can be highly addictive and especially harmful for teenagers, whose brains are still developing. But when parents are worried, the most effective first step is not a lecture — it’s a conversation.

Moe Gelbart, PhD, director of behavioral health at Torrance Memorial Medical Center and executive director of the Thelma McMillen Recovery Center, shares practical guidance for parents on how to talk with teens about va**ng, ask better questions, listen without judgment and know when professional help may be needed.

Regular health screenings are one of the best ways older adults can protect their long-term health.

Many conditions, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, osteoporosis and some cancers, may not cause noticeable symptoms in their earliest stages. Brian Stone, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician with Torrance Memorial Physician Network, explains which screenings older adults should discuss with their primary care provider and why preventive care matters.

South Bay summers mean beach days, park time and plenty of sunshine — but kids’ skin needs extra protection.

Help reduce sun damage and lower their future risk of skin cancer by making sun safety part of your family’s daily routine: apply broad-spectrum sunscreen, reapply often, seek shade and use protective clothing, hats and sunglasses.

For babies younger than 6 months, keep them out of direct sunlight and use shade and protective clothing instead of sunscreen whenever possible.

A little prep before outdoor play can go a long way in protecting young skin.
