Torrance Memorial Medical Center is proud to introduce the da Vinci 5® surgical system—the newest and most advanced addition to Intuitive’s portfolio of robotic-assisted surgical technologies.

Featuring more than 150 design innovations, da Vinci 5 offers enhanced 3DHD visualization, wristed instruments and technology designed to support precision, efficiency and advanced minimally invasive care. The system may be used for urologic, gynecologic, thoracic and general surgery procedures.

During every procedure, the surgeon remains 100% in control. The system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into smaller, precise movements of instruments inside the patient’s body.

This investment reflects Torrance Memorial’s continued commitment to bringing advanced surgical technology and minimally invasive treatment options to patients throughout the South Bay.

Congratulations to Samantha Almazan-Afidchao, a recipient of Torrance Memorial’s Reason Is You Award.

When a patient needed help resolving a billing concern, Samantha stepped in—even though the matter was outside her department. She reviewed the patient’s documents, connected directly with the appropriate manager and stayed involved until the patient received the assistance and reassurance they needed.

The patient praised Samantha for her graciousness, competence and willingness to take ownership of the situation.

Thank you, Samantha, for going above and beyond and representing Torrance Memorial with professionalism and compassion. The Reason Is You!

Cancer treatment has changed some of David Carter’s plans. It hasn’t stopped him from making them.

For the past decade, Carter (pictured at left) and longtime friend George Ross have been working their way through an ambitious “25 by 75” bucket list—25 iconic sporting events and adventures before their 75th birthdays. Their travels have taken them from the Running of the Bulls and FIFA World Cup Final to the Kentucky Derby and Indianapolis 500.

Along the way, Carter has also faced two separate cancer diagnoses, surgeries, treatment and other health setbacks. With support from his family and care team at Torrance Memorial’s Hunt Cancer Institute, he continues to make room for the experiences and relationships that matter most to him.

Their story is a reminder that even when life changes the itinerary, there can still be plenty of adventure ahead.

Can prostate cancer be prevented?

There is no guaranteed way to prevent prostate cancer, and some of its strongest risk factors—including age, family history, race and inherited genetic changes—cannot be changed.

While no particular food, supplement or lifestyle has been proven to prevent the disease, maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, avoiding to***co and following a balanced eating pattern can support your overall health.

Just as important is knowing your personal risk and asking your healthcare provider when prostate cancer screening may be appropriate. When prostate cancer is detected at a localized or regional stage, the five-year relative survival rate is greater than 99%.
