"researchers have expanded upon their previous research focused on one specific protein – heat shock protein 90 – and its role in opioid receptor activation and pain relief. Their prior investigations have found that inhibiting Hsp90 in signaling pathways in the spinal cord has an important role in enhancing the effectiveness and decreasing the side effects of opioid therapy.

Dr. Streicher’s research team has demonstrated that Hsp90 can prevent pathways in the spinal cord from producing the natural pain relief responses that they are designed to do in the body. To overcome this, they have been studying drugs that can inhibit the activation of Hsp90 in animal models. Their work has shown that using these inhibitors unblocks the pathway and provides another route for improved pain relief.

“Once we established the important role that this protein has in the spinal cord, we wanted to explore how it regulates pain,” Dr. Streicher said. “We have been digging further into the mechanisms that make this a druggable target so that we can more precisely translate it to the clinic.”

The study suggests that the combination of long hours of playing, repetitive movements, and sustained postures puts orchestra musicians at a high risk of developing MSDs. These disorders can significantly impact the musicians' ability to perform, leading to missed rehearsals, canceled performances, and even career-ending injuries. The study underscores the need for early intervention, appropriate treatment, and preventive measures to reduce the risk of MSDs in various professions, and serves as a reminder that many occupations that require repetitive actions or even sitting for prolonged periods should take notes from the preventive measures employed in the performing arts.

Preventive measures might include:

1. Ergonomic assessments and adjustments of workstations and instruments
2. Regular breaks to avoid prolonged periods of repetitive actions or sitting
3. Stretching and exercise programs to improve flexibility and strength
4. Training on proper technique and posture to reduce strain on the body
5. Access to medical care, including early intervention and treatment of symptoms before they worsen.
