Losing a lot of weight quickly is a real achievement. But many people are surprised by what comes next: loose skin.
Here’s why it happens. Skin that has been stretched for years loses some of its collagen and elastic fibers. When fat shrinks quickly, especially with GLP-1 medications like Ozempic and Wegovy, the skin often can’t contract as fast or as fully.
It most often shows up on the lower abdomen, upper arms, thighs, breasts and neck. The face can change too, with hollower cheeks and temples and looser skin under the jaw.
How much your skin bounces back depends on how much weight you lose, how fast you lose it, your age and genetics, how long the weight was carried, and past sun damage or smoking.
What helps:
• Time: skin can keep tightening a little for about a year after your weight stabilizes.
• Strength training: it firms the muscle underneath, though it doesn’t remove excess skin.
• Surgery: when the excess is significant, procedures like a tummy tuck, arm lift, thigh lift or breast lift are the way to remove it.
Timing matters. The best results usually come once you’re near your goal weight and have held it steady for several months.
Save this for later, and share it with someone on their own weight-loss journey.
