Today is the first ever National Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD) Awareness Day.

In aesthetics, this is such an important day.

BDD is not simply being unhappy with part of your appearance. It can involve an intense preoccupation with a perceived flaw, repeated reassurance seeking, unrealistic expectations, and dissatisfaction that cosmetic treatment may never resolve.

For aesthetic providers, patient safety is about more than technique. It also means recognizing red flags, screening appropriately, setting boundaries, and knowing when treatment may not be the right answer. Have referrals ready at least three to therapist specialize in obsessive compulsive disorders. We had several successful cases of patients who were actually good candidates after therapy for Aesthetic treatments and were so grateful that we took the time to refer them to a specialist.

Leslie Fletcher, AGNP-BC, has published peer reviewed research on BDD in aesthetic patients and is sharing more today about what providers should understand and why screening matters.

Sometimes the most ethical treatment decision is knowing when not to treat!
