CHWC delivers a range of integrated healthcare services, including medical, dental, chiropractic, nutrition, podiatry, and behavioral health, we well as an in-house lab and pharmacy. CHWC participates with most state and commercial insurance plans, utilizing a sliding fee scale to ensure accessibility for individuals of all financial backgrounds. The organization extends its impact by offering physical and mental health services through school-based health centers in all Torrington schools, and three schools in the Region One school district. Michelle Steele is a board-certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) and Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (ANP). She earned her masterโ€™s degree in primary care from the University of Connecticut and later completed a post-masterโ€™s certificate in psychiatric mental health at the University of Saint Joseph in 2021 where she also received a bachelorโ€™s degree in nursing and biology.

Michelle practices with a holistic approach, recognizing the interconnected nature of health, wellness, and disease through a biopsychosocial lens. She is committed to delivering comprehensive, compassionate care to a diverse patient population. Her process includes thorough initial evaluations and continuous assessments at each visit to ensure patients receive the most appropriate and effective medication treatment. Her clinical focus includes, but is not limited to, ADHD, psychosis, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and substance use disorders.

This morning, CHWC hosted several members of the Department of Social Services (DSS) to meet with our Leadership team to discuss the specific needs that CHWC, our patients, and the community in the Northwest Corner are facing as the Stateโ€™s Rural Transformation Program begins to take shape.

Following the leadership meeting, CHWC invited community partners to a Town Hall meeting with DSS to explain what the grant is and how it will impact the region, and to gain valuable insight into the challenges that rural areas including the Northwest Corner face, such as transportation barriers, housing instability, and food insecurity.

Members from Community Health Center Association of Connecticut, New Opportunities Inc., Brooker Memorial, Greenwoods Counseling & Referrals, Inc., FISH / Friends in Service to Humanity of Northwestern Connecticut, Inc., Torrington Area Health District, Northwest Hills Council of Governments, and Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR) were present to voice their opinions on what is needed in our region.

It was a busy week for CHWC!
On Friday, members of our team attended the Geer Village Health Fair to promote our services and provide blood pressure checks for attendees. We had representatives attend from our Behavioral Health, Nutrition, Medical and Community Health Departments.

This week our CEO, Joanne Borduas, held a Community Conversation at the Norfolk Hub CT where she spoke about the challenges that Community Health Centers across the state are facing with impending federal funding cuts and policy changes.
She also discussed how those changes will impact CHWC and the Northwest Corner where access to care is already a challenge for many. Following her presentation was a lively Q&A with the audience and some time afterwards for attendees to speak with Joanne directly about how they can support CHWC.

Starting today, May 22, 2026, CHWC is transitioning its laboratory services from Quest Diagnostics to LabCorp. This change allows us to offer our patients more reliable hours and convenient in-house lab work with a company that commonly works with FQHCโ€™s and the unique needs of their patients. The last day for lab services will be today until 12:00pm.

During this transition, our lab services on-site will be unavailable until LabCorp has outfitted the lab space accordingly. We anticipate this transition to be complete by the end of June and will update you when LabCorp is open.
