For years, Harriet Turner has quietly made a difference in the lives of others. Now, the longtime Missouri Baptist Medical Center Ballas Boutique volunteer is being recognized with statewide honors for her remarkable spirit of service.

Harriet recently received a Champions of Missouri Award from U.S. Sen. Eric Schmitt’s office, recognizing Missourians who have shown exemplary service to their communities and the state of Missouri. The tribute was entered into the Congressional Record in February, and Harriet was formally presented with the award in July.

After retiring in 2013 from a 25-year nursing career at Missouri Baptist, Harriet returned to the hospital less than a year later as a volunteer at the Ballas Boutique gift shop. Today, she continues to support patients, families, visitors, and team members through her warm presence and dedication to service.

“It makes me feel good to help other people,” Harriet said. “Because you are outside of yourself. You are doing something for someone else.”

Beyond her work at the hospital, Harriet has helped organize a community garden that provides fresh produce to a local food pantry and volunteers with the Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition’s Project Dream Dress program.

Congratulations, Harriet, and thank you for the compassion, kindness, and service you bring to Missouri Baptist every day. 💙

We are honored to be ranked as the #2 hospital in St. Louis and Missouri on U.S. News and World Report's 2026–2027 Best Hospitals list.

Missouri Baptist Medical Center joins other BJC HealthCare hospitals in the St. Louis regional rankings, including Barnes-Jewish Hospital at #1, Christian Hospital at #6, and Memorial Hospital Belleville and Memorial Hospital Shiloh at #7.

In addition, MoBap was recognized as high performing in urology, a distinction awarded to hospitals in the top 10% nationally, and received high performing ratings in 21 additional procedures and conditions, including heart attack, prostate cancer surgery, stroke, kidney failure, and more.

What began as a planned hip replacement for Julie quickly became an unexpected journey. Just weeks before her scheduled surgery at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Julie suffered a fall that resulted in a second hip injury, requiring an entirely different course of treatment.

Throughout every step of her care, Julie was supported by her best friend of more than 34 years, Gwen, who remained by her side during her hospitalization.

Together, they described the care they received at MoBap as exceptional.

From physicians and nurses to therapists, dietitians, and support staff, Julie and Gwen said every interaction helped ease their fears and made them feel welcomed, comfortable, and cared for during a stressful time.

“Everyone was so kind, smiling, and welcoming. We really appreciate your staff.”

Julie also spoke highly of the physicians who cared for her throughout both hospital stays. She said Dr. James Burke and Dr. Christopher Mudd, both orthopedic surgeons, had amazing bedside manner and helped her feel reassured every step of the way. She described them as phenomenal, kind, gentle, and “a blessing.” She was also grateful for the support of her primary care physician, BJC Medical Group physician Dr. Ben Voss, throughout her recovery.

Although Julie experienced another setback after surgery and returned to MoBap for additional care, she said the support she received never wavered.

“The entire team made us feel comfortable, and every interaction contributed to such a positive experience.”

Looking back on everything she experienced, one thought stood out most:

“It’s comforting to know we have such a great place to go for our care.”

Congratulations to the first graduating class of Missouri Baptist Medical Center's Transitional Internship Program! 👏

A year ago, 13 physicians arrived at Missouri Baptist ready for the next step in their training. As they cared for patients, tackled new challenges, learned from mentors and colleagues, and gained the experience and confidence they'll carry into the next phase of their careers, they also discovered the kind of physicians they want to become.

Along the way, these physicians explored a variety of specialties, built a strong clinical foundation, and helped shape a new chapter in medical education at Missouri Baptist.

Now, they're taking the next step in their journeys. Some will continue their training close to home at Barnes-Jewish Hospital with WashU Medicine, while others will pursue advanced specialty training at institutions across the country.

We're proud of all they accomplished and grateful for the care they provided to our patients and community. Join us in celebrating the inaugural graduating class of our Transitional Internship Program.

We're proud to welcome Kristina Anderson, MD, to BJC Medical Group Family Medicine at Missouri Baptist Medical Center–Suite 226A.

According to her mom, Dr. Anderson's interest in medicine may have started with the movie E.T. As the story goes, she was so upset that E.T. was sick that she wanted to be one of the doctors who could help him get better. As she got older, that desire to help others grew into a love of science, community service, and caring for people.

Family medicine proved to be the perfect fit. Dr. Anderson enjoys helping patients find answers, whether they're dealing with a new concern, managing a chronic condition, or trying to stay healthy for the future. She believes everyone deserves to be cared for by a trusted medical professional who can help them navigate health concerns and make informed decisions about their care.

One of the things Dr. Anderson enjoys most about family medicine is caring for multiple generations of the same family. She considers it an honor to earn that kind of trust and to celebrate patients' successes alongside them.

As a board-certified family medicine physician, Dr. Anderson cares for patients of all ages, from infants and children to adults and seniors. She provides preventive care, well-woman exams, immunizations, and treatment for a wide range of conditions, including asthma, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, colds, flu, and women’s health concerns. She also performs in-office procedures such as minor skin procedures, joint injections, and contraception placement.

Outside of work, Dr. Anderson enjoys spending time with her family, watching funny cat videos with her son, cheering on the St. Louis Blues, and exploring everything the area has to offer—from the zoo and Missouri Botanical Garden to local restaurants, museums, and performances. She also enjoys growing houseplants, collecting and tumbling rocks and minerals, crafting, thrifting, and listening to audiobooks.

One moment, Charlotte was having dinner with her husband. The next, she couldn’t speak. She felt no pain—just a sudden sense that something wasn’t right.

Joe had seen Charlotte experience transient ischemic attacks before—but this time, he knew something far more serious was happening.

“It felt different,” he says. “I knew we needed to move fast.”

That decision made all the difference.

At Missouri Baptist Medical Center, the Emergency Department team was ready—connecting with a WashU Medicine neurologist through BJC HealthCare’s 24/7 telestroke network. The team quickly confirmed the diagnosis: an ischemic stroke caused by a blood clot.

When it comes to stroke, time is brain—and Charlotte didn’t have time to lose. She received tenecteplase, a newer clot-busting medication, which restored blood flow and gave her the best chance at recovery.

Today, Charlotte is moving forward with confidence—supported by her care team, including BJC Medical Group neurologist Michael Butler, MD, and a community of fellow survivors through Missouri Baptist’s stroke support group.

“It gives me strength knowing I’m not alone,” she says.

We're excited to welcome Katie Upton, FNP, to the Arrhythmia Center on the campus of Missouri Baptist Medical Center.

Katie was inspired to follow her mother into nursing after seeing the difference she made in people's lives. Later, an opportunity to shadow ICU nurses confirmed that health care was the right path for her. She wanted a career where she could be of service to others.

She was drawn to cardiology after witnessing a loved one navigate multiple heart conditions and procedures. “Wanting to better understand her diagnoses and treatment sparked an interest that eventually became a specialty,” Katie says.

Today, Katie focuses on helping patients understand their conditions and the options available to treat them. She takes time to explain complex diagnoses, answer questions, and help patients feel confident in the decisions they make about their care. After nine years as a medical and cardiovascular ICU nurse, she values the opportunity to build lasting relationships and enjoys seeing patients get back to the activities they love.

As a family nurse practitioner specializing in cardiovascular electrophysiology, Katie cares for adults with conditions affecting the heart's electrical system, including arrhythmias, tachycardias, and atrial fibrillation. She also provides follow-up care for pacemakers and implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), as well as management of medications.

Outside of work, Katie enjoys staying active through running, swimming, hiking, and snowboarding. She also enjoys exploring St. Louis, attending concerts and festivals, cheering on the Blues, and spending time with her rescue animals.

Ron consistently goes above and beyond to support our team and campus. From leading innovative irrigation system upgrades that have reduced water usage and costs to expanding our in-house sign shop capabilities, his work has made a lasting impact across the medical center.

In addition to maintaining the beauty and safety of our campus, Ron plays a vital role in our snow response efforts, preventive maintenance, and vehicle fleet operations. He’s even balancing all of this while working toward his degree!
