When it comes to serving others, McKenna brings her whole heart to everything she does—which is why we are proud to recognize her as a recent Employee of the Month! 🎉

McKenna played an important role in MoBap on a Mission, collaborating with team members to coordinate community service opportunities. She took the initiative to reach out to local organizations, schedule volunteer opportunities, and share her passion for serving others. Her dedication helped make the initiative a meaningful experience for everyone involved.

As a nurse on our postpartum floor, McKenna brings that same kindness, thoughtfulness, and positive attitude to her work every day. She is a wonderful patient advocate who cares deeply for patients and their families, while also being a supportive and motivating teammate.

"She is a kind, thoughtful, and emotionally generous nurse who puts her all into everything she does," her nominator shared. "McKenna's warm personality leaves a lasting impact on everyone she meets—especially our patients."

There’s more to health care than what happens at the bedside—it’s also about the people who support one another behind the scenes and come together as a team.

Missouri Baptist Medical Center employees recently enjoyed an end-of-summer celebration with snow cones, conversation, and time to connect. When asked what makes their work meaningful, patient care and teamwork topped the list!

“She made me feel safe, supported, and genuinely cared for.”

That’s how one grateful patient described Bianca, a nurse in inpatient surgical at MoBap. It’s just one of many reasons why she is our latest DAISY Award winner. 🌼 👏

“Going into surgery can be an overwhelming and emotional experience,” the patient shared. "But from the moment Bianca introduced herself, her calm presence, compassion, and confidence helped put me at ease."

“She took the time to answer my questions, explain what to expect, and reassure me when I was feeling nervous.”

Throughout the experience, Bianca continued to make a difficult day feel easier. Her patient shared that she listened carefully, took their concerns seriously, and was a constant source of support.

“Knowing that she was in my corner made all the difference and gave me confidence that I was receiving the best possible care.”

The patient also recognized the little things that made a lasting impact.

“She anticipated needs before I even had to ask, checked on me frequently, and consistently made me feel valued and respected.”

Perhaps most meaningful of all, the patient shared, “She treated me as a person, not just a patient.”

While the patient’s surgery was successful, they said, "it is Bianca's kindness, advocacy, and exceptional nursing care that I will remember long after my recovery is complete."

We're excited to welcome Joseph Roh, MD, to BJC Medical Group ENT Specialists at Missouri Baptist Medical Center.

Originally, Dr. Roh didn't plan on becoming a physician. After spending years studying head and neck cancer and Alzheimer's disease, he was on track for a career in scientific research.

But the more time he spent in laboratories, the more he realized he wanted to work directly with the people that research was meant to help. That ultimately led him back to school and toward a career in medicine.

Dr. Roh was introduced to ENT through family members working in the specialty. As he progressed through medical school, that early familiarity grew into a deeper appreciation for the many ways otolaryngology can improve patients' quality of life.

"Hearing, speaking, breathing, eating, and expression are all such important parts of how we experience the world and connect with other people," Dr. Roh says. "Being able to help patients with conditions that affect those experiences adds a very special dimension to what we do."

For Dr. Roh, good care starts with listening. He takes time to understand his patients' concerns, answer their questions, and help them feel confident in their diagnosis and treatment plan.

"While my primary goal is to get my patients well and back to their best health, helping people understand what's going on and develop strategies to manage ongoing conditions can be just as important," he says.

Many of the patients Dr. Roh sees return over months or years, creating opportunities to build trust and lasting relationships with them and their families.

"Getting to know patients and their families, especially during some of their most vulnerable times, is one of the most meaningful parts of my job," he says. "Working through those challenges together can be incredibly rewarding."

As an otolaryngologist, Dr. Roh treats patients of all ages for a wide range of ear, nose, and throat conditions, including sinus disease, hearing loss, ear infections, sleep apnea, hoarseness, swallowing disorders, and neck masses. He also performs procedures including ear tube placement, eardrum repair, sinus surgery, tonsillectomy, and vocal cord endoscopy.

Originally from the Kansas City area, Dr. Roh moved to St. Louis for medical school and is happy to call the region home. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family, exploring the city, hiking, camping, cooking, and trying new restaurants.

Rick, an advanced technologist on the CT team, has exemplified our BJC values through his outstanding support of the team.

While leading daily huddles, Rick demonstrates respect and kindness, keeping the team informed and focused during busy shifts. His positive attitude and even a daily joke help keep the team grounded, calm, and engaged during high-pressure situations.

Rick also consistently demonstrates teamwork by supporting other imaging teams whenever needed. From helping X-ray during busy periods to assisting MRI patients, Rick helps ensure everyone is providing a positive patient experience.

We're excited to welcome Hunter Mitchell, MD, a BJC Medical Group neurologist, to the MS Center for Innovations in Care.

Growing up, Dr. Mitchell was inspired by the example her parents set as health care professionals and the difference they made in the lives of others. She knew she wanted to follow a similar path.

During medical school, Dr. Mitchell became familiar with patients and families affected by neuroimmunologic conditions, an area of medicine she had not previously encountered. Seeing the need for specialized care, education, and support sparked her desire to help patients manage complex neurological disorders.

Dr. Mitchell believes patients are better equipped to navigate their condition when they understand what's happening in their bodies and how their choices can affect their health. She enjoys helping patients make sense of complex diagnoses, treatment options, and lifestyle changes so they can feel more confident managing their care.

She also values the long-term relationships she builds with patients and their caregiver support systems. Some of her proudest moments come from watching family members and friends gain confidence in helping a loved one navigate a diagnosis.

"The emotional and mental burden on caregivers can be overwhelming," she says. "It brings me joy when I see friends and family growing in their roles, big or small."

As a neurologist specializing in neuroimmunology, Dr. Mitchell cares for adults with conditions including multiple sclerosis, neuromyelitis optica (NMO), MOG antibody disease, neurosarcoidosis, autoimmune encephalitis and meningitis, myelopathy, optic neuritis, and paraneoplastic syndromes. She is committed to helping patients and families feel supported as they navigate life with complex neurological conditions.

Outside of work, Dr. Mitchell enjoys any activity that keeps her moving, whether it's dancing, yoga, ceramics, or karaoke. Originally from Memphis, Tennessee, she is excited to be part of the St. Louis community.

As the patient experience manager at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, Abby, MSN, RN, interacts daily with patients and their loved ones.

The patient experience team she leads helps guests feel supported from the moment they arrive at the hospital. Whether it’s answering questions, navigating visits, or addressing concerns about care, patient experience team members listen and work to provide solutions.

“We want to bring the patient voice to the table for the hospital,” Abby says. “We also work with all the service lines and hospital staff members to recognize what’s working well and where we can improve.”

Abby never forgets what it’s like to walk in a patient’s shoes. It was her family’s experience receiving exceptional care at Missouri Baptist that inspired her to pursue the job she loves.

In 2018, Abby and her husband, Dan, chose Missouri Baptist for prenatal care during Abby’s pregnancy.

“The Labor and Delivery team here at Missouri Baptist was absolutely incredible,” Abby says. “I had to have an emergency cesarean section. Fortunately, my daughter was healthy and didn’t need to spend time in the NICU, but just knowing it was there if we needed it was comforting.”

About three years later, the family again turned to Missouri Baptist in a time of need when Dan began experiencing elevated blood pressure and arrhythmia. His care team discovered severe blockages in four arteries, and he underwent emergency quadruple bypass surgery.

Dan’s surgery and recovery were successful. Years later, Abby joined Missouri Baptist as its patient experience manager.

“I wanted to give back to the place that cared for my family,” she says. “It was an easy decision.”

Today, Abby relies on her family’s experience at Missouri Baptist to help guide her work, including efforts to improve communication with families during surgery.

“We offer empathy and understanding when people walk through our doors,” she says. “What I experienced here as a patient guides me every day.”

Meet Dr. Sara Ahmed, a second-year internal medicine resident at the Missouri Baptist Medical Center Internal Medicine Residency Clinic. 👋

Dr. Ahmed’s interest in medicine began after a childhood sports injury introduced her to the compassionate physicians who inspired her to pursue a career in health care. Today, she’s continuing that journey by caring for patients while completing her residency in internal medicine.

One of the experiences that has had the greatest impact on Dr. Ahmed was volunteering at outreach clinics in Pakistan providing care to underserved communities with limited access to health care.

"That experience will always be one of my proudest memories,” she shared.

At MoBap, Dr. Ahmed has found a culture that has made her residency experience especially meaningful.

“MoBap has a culture of empathy and kindness that is reflected in every resident here," Sara said. "What I appreciate most is how approachable everyone is and how genuinely eager they are to help.”

Dr. Ahmed enjoys that no two days in internal medicine are the same and values the opportunity to continue learning and growing as a physician.

She also has a special interest in gut health and encourages patients to look beyond marketing when choosing probiotics and prebiotics.

She recommends looking for products that list a specific probiotic strain, guarantee live cultures through the expiration date and contain proven prebiotic fibers, such as inulin, fructooligosaccharides (FOS) or galactooligosaccharides (GOS), which help feed healthy gut bacteria.

From the moment patients walk through the doors of our Cancer and Infusion Center, Dawn helps them feel welcomed, supported, and cared for. Her compassion and positivity have made a lasting impact on countless patients, families, and fellow team members.

Patients receiving cancer treatment often arrive feeling anxious or overwhelmed, but Dawn goes above and beyond to make them feel comfortable—whether it’s offering a warm blanket, a comforting hug, or simply taking the time to listen. Patients and team members regularly share how her thoughtful care helps ease fears and turns difficult appointments into more positive experiences.

A stroke can affect much more than speech. It can impact a person’s ability to communicate, understand language, express thoughts, eat safely, problem solve, and even swallow.

Kristen Forand, a speech language pathologist at MoBap, says speech therapy focuses on rebuilding these skills to improve independence in everyday activities and communication.

She also wants people to know that aphasia, a common condition after stroke, is often misunderstood. “Aphasia is the loss of communication, not a loss of cognition.” Many stroke survivors with aphasia understand more than what they can express, and recovery looks different for every person.
