Congratulations to Elliot Sultanik, MD, Cardiologist, our first Provider Excellence Award winner! This award, presented annually, recognizes a provider who has demonstrated exemplary service to our patients.

During rounds, Dr. Sultanik recognized that a patient was having new neurological symptoms, escalated the concern and quickly got the patient the care they needed. He adjusted the patient’s treatment plan and the patient drastically improved over the next 48 hours.

Thank you, Dr. Sultanik, for your dedication, expertise and unwavering commitment to zero patient harm!

Congratulations to Maya Johnson, Patient Care Technician I, for being recognized with the Josie King Patient Safety Award!

Maya demonstrated exceptional vigilance and clinical judgement when a patient activated the call light but did not respond. Rather than dismissing the call, she went directly to the bedside and quickly recognized a change in the patient's speech.

She escalated her concerns leading to a rapid response and timely treatment for a transient ischemic attack (TIA). This great catch made a meaningful difference in the patient’s care.

Her dedication reflects our High-Reliability Organization principle of preoccupation with failure — meaning that everyone, regardless of role or hierarchy, is focused on speaking up, identifying and learning from errors and near-misses and figuring out how to prevent them from happening again.

Thank you, Maya, for your steadfast commitment to excellence and patient safety!
