Pickersgill Retirement Community is a nonprofit retirement community nestled among dogwoods on a beautiful ycampus in Towson, Md. Pickersgill has a tradition of excellence, and a rich history. Founded, and named after former board member Mary Pickersgill—the seamstress who inspired “The Star Spangled Banner” with her flag that waved over Fort McHenry—Pickersgill is the rare community that can claim it has dutifully served generations of seniors in the Baltimore area for more than 200 years. It isn't too early to find a friend at Pickersgill who will invite you next summer to the best crab feast in town. The independent living dining room was packed and the auditorium was filled with assisted living residents, all there to enjoy a banquet of crabs. For those who didn't want to get messy (but isn't that half the fun?) there were crab cakes and crab soup and other side dishes. The tireless Morrison's staff kept the huge platters of crabs coming and continually tidied up the piles of shells. It was a wonderful event, a summer tradition at Pickersgill.

As you can see, this is a favorite activity, and a great indoors one on a sweltering summer day. Everyone came to play!

It was a perfect day for a car? wash. Pickersgill's version, that is. The Activities Department erected a pretty close facsimile with a little bit of a struggle (they thank profusely the family member who gallantly helped them build it as onlookers on the patio watched laughing), and over 25 residents had their 'vehicles' cleaned. With music playing several even sashayed to the beat as they entered the tunnel. The Activities staff gave each wheelchair and walker a more-than-thorough going over, and the residents departed with a clean machine and an air freshener to dangle from their ride. One resident commented the wheels on her chair had never been so clean!

Pickersgill's summer festivities continued today, with a 'men's only' barbecue lunch. Residents came from all corners of Pickersgill to feast on barbecue sandwiches and all the sides. Overseen by the amazing Activities Department staff and amply fed by the dining services, attendees and invited guests enjoyed food and camaraderie, with a few new acquaintances struck up.

Pickersgill residents hosted their longtime friends from Hawaii in their 13th luau together. It was an hour of lovely music and dancing, during which the guests gave information about the dances and their culture. They also reminded us that it was their town, Lahaina, that was destroyed by fires in August of 2024. Despite that somber note, the party was full of festivity, family, friends and food (lots of food!). Several brave audience members even learned a dance in front of the appreciative crowd. The Activities Department once again outdid themselves!

People are never too old for Easter fun. It began in the morning on Friday with residents dyeing and decorating Easter eggs. After lunch the hunt was on: observant residents searched for eggs hidden all around the festive second floor. One astute resident even spotted one in a hand sanitizer dispenser.

The Pickersgill Players packed the theater (well, the Meeting Room) Saturday, March 7, with its first ever performance of Agatha Christie’s classic whodunit, “The Mousetrap.” Originally written by Christie in 1947 as a radio play for the British Queen Mary’s 80th birthday, it was adapted into a full-length stage play in 1952 and is the world’s longest-running play.

Nine Pickersgill residents from all parts of the community came together after several months of rehearsals to baffle audience members as to the identity of the killer among the stranded potential victims staying in the mysterious Monkswell Manor. The actors had the audience stumped until the identify was revealed!

We look forward to the next presentation by our very own theater troupe. (Once they return from Broadway.)
