Many thanks to Avila's partners at GBMC - Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Gilchrist Cares for an extraordinary Community Benefit Annual Meeting yesterday. As nonprofits, GBMC and Gilchrist work in collaboration with MedStar Health, University of Maryland St. Joseph Medical Center, Norwest Hospital of LifeBridge Health and the Baltimore County Department of Health and Human Services to survey and interview several thousand residents of Baltimore County's 850,000 population via the Community Health Needs Assessment in order to better understand and address health care needs in our community. GBMC's President and CEO Dr. Gopalakrishnan emphasized that health begins at home, and the belief that healthy meals, help with medications, transportation, access to care and social support (all of which Avila provides for our clients!) are all vital factors in ensuring that every person has the opportunity to achieve their best health. For the State of Maryland, which has THE HIGHEST incidence of dementia in the entire United States, there is tremendous power in partnership for us all to work together to ensure our most vulnerable and underserved residents, including seniors and their families, are well cared for. An incredibly helpful Resource Fair followed yesterday's meeting, where us partners in care organizations exchanged ideas and information to share with our clients. Special thanks to Baltimore County Department of Aging, Ulman Foundation, Associated Black Charities, Alzheimer's Association Maryland Chapter, Moveable Feast and all the other organizations who serve our community so well!

With May being a busy month, we cannot forget to highlight our Caregiver of the Month Olivia Ackaah. Olivia is a very kind and dependable Caregiver who is always willing to help out whenever needed. She is extremely reliable and consistently goes the extra mile to make sure her clients feel supported, comfortable, and well cared for. Olivia's clients truly enjoy working with her and always have wonderful things to say about the care she provides. Her compassion, positive attitude, and dedication make her a valued part of the Avila team.

We are so grateful for everything Olivia brings to her work each day! Thank you, Olivia!

THANK YOU to the wonderful physicians, nurses and staff GBMC - Greater Baltimore Medical Center at Texas Station, who cheerfully and warmly welcomed Avila's Will Cox and Gretchen Maneval yesterday! We brought lunch to their team to thank them for their incredible service to their patients, and to learn from them how Avila can be most helpful supporting their patients. Personal care, respite for family Caregivers, transportation and help with medication administration and reminders were at the top of their list. We are grateful to the GBMC Texas Station team for taking time out of their very busy schedules to meet with us, and we look forward to continuing to support their vital work caring for their patients so well!

What a lovely morning at Pickersgill Retirement Community! Avila's Gretchen Maneval spent time with their wonderful Activities Director Melissa Miller to make a plan for Avila Music Makers and Avila Art Makers to come to Pickersgill! Gretchen also got to spend time with an esteemed architect (previously a Principal at Hord Coplan Macht HCM) and his wife, who reside at Pickersgill with their sweet dog Oliver. During his career, the architect designed and built many senior living communities across the country (he's also a proud alum of the Architecture "A" School at University of Virginia where Gretchen went to undergrad and minored in Urban Planning also at the "A School" so they had lots to chat about- go Wahoo's!) Melissa shared an incredible book about Pickersgill's history with Gretchen, who learned that Pickersgill is the oldest continuously running retirement community in all of the United States! Pickersgill has a fantastic art collection- including portraits of Henrietta and Augustus Seemuller, whose estate made possible the purchase of the property where Pickersgill now stands. We can't wait to bring even more art and music to this thriving community!

Avila loves all of the art enthusiasts and artists at Brightview Senior Living Mays Chapel Ridge and Brightview Senior Living Severna Park- thank you for hosting your new Avila Art Makers exhibits! It was wonderful spending time with all of the residents who were excited to get a first look at the new exhibits with paintings by Gretchen Maneval and Nancy Fine. And it was so lovely seeing BV Mays Chapel Ridge staff (Lauren, Executive Director; Jamie, Director of Vibrant Living; and Cece, Health Services Director)- and very special thanks to Bobby in maintenance and even their tech guy for pitching in :-)! Always a super fun time seeing Hillary (Dir. of Vibrant Living), Jim (Executive Director), Alan (Community Sales) and all of the incredible staff at BV Severna Park. We can't wait to spend time with everyone again at our Artist Talks this summer!

As the grand finale of National Nurses Week, Avila Home Care was delighted to bring lunch and talk to the wonderful nurses and social workers at our partner Sinai Hospital at LifeBridge Health! Avila's Will Cox shared what makes Avila's 700 Caregivers and the care they provide so unique- caregiving is a calling for them, not just a job. Avila is also unique because we don't require a long-term commitment from our clients, and we do provide 2 hours visits (with no minimum weekly or monthly requirements). We talked about how Avila can best support the incredible work of Sinai's front-line staff, as well as LifeBridge's patients and their families when they leave the hospital. THANK YOU for all you do, Sinai Hospital Care Team- we are grateful for you!
